From what if seen on the site, the top speed for a 06 sierra w/ the 5.3 is 98 MPH, the limiting factor being the tires. My question is, i bought my truck with the factory 20" GM wheels and goodyear tires, as part of the "Limited Edition Package", since these tires are rated for a higher speed ( 120 i think) would my truck still be limited to 98 MPH ??

The computer limits your speed to 98.

The tires just have a recommended speed rating which shouldn't be exceeded. That is all that means.

Speaking of that, what happens when you do exceed the rated speed of the tire exactly? Shreads after a while? Large increase of blow out? I've never known. I figured it would be good knowledge to have. :D

I would assume something like that. I think my tires are rated for 130, and I've been north of 140 (limiter's removed).

Even though nothing came apart, I don't need to go any faster than that anyway. Scary part is, that was in 3rd. It never shifted into 4th. :D

Thats pretty crazy, mine are only rated up to 93... After 100 the truck feels like a boat on water, and the steering feels kinda loose, so I dont like going that fast...now I really dont want to go that fast. I want to see how it feels after 100 with the ride control on, might help a bit. My speedo only goes to 120, I've had it a little past that, it stayed in 3rd also.

Depends on your rear gear i think. My 06 V6 with 323s would never go into 4th after about 80.

Also about the speed limiter, thats in your trucks programming. It doesnt know what tires you have, it goes by what limiter is programmed in it every time you start the truck. I have never seen a 98mph tire(of course i dont really look too much). My trucks came with 110 rated tires.

im prerty sure the speed rating on tires goes like this.... 110mph tire will withstand 110 mph for 50 miles at 100degree f. temp. if i remeber right!! and that would work for each rating 50 miles ant 100 degrees f.
