Nothing in my manual either. I go by the standard "change fluid after the first 500 miles of towing and every 50K from that point on".

Based on recommendations for other trucks I owned before this Chevy, they recommended changing the differential oil on 4X4 trucks about every 30k miles. More often if the trucks was in severe service, such as constant towing of heavy loads, off-road use, etc.

I notice in my OM it says to check the axle lubricant... But how do I do that?

I was under my '03 Z71 Silverado looking around tonight and I don't see how to check the front axles.

Any tips?

Stick your finger in the fill plug and feel for oil. if ya feel it, its good.

And no, this is not the XX mm below fill plug specification.

I filled my rear axle with Amsoil severe gear oil. According to Amsoil the service interval is 100k under normal conditions and 50k under severe conditions. Because I tow I plan to go by the severe conditions. This is based on using thier synthetic gear oil.

With new trucks with limited slip difs if you do any service make sure you use the right oil with the right friction modifiers.

In this case sometimes its easier just to demand using the GM part # oil specific for your truck even though it costs more than it should.

The G80 should not require friction modifier. And there is no good reason IMO why you should pay $27 per quart for some nice grape smelling oil.

I run Mobil 1 and change it front and rear every 40-50K. I have 195K on my Tahoe with about 40K of that towing (5,000-6,000lbs). No problems to date.

You're right you don't need to use any special fluid with the g80. That's because its a locker.

Then again if you didn't want an LSD you could always run a G86 with no friction modifier.
