Shock Replacement

Wondering if it's time to replace the shocks on my 01 Sierra z-71, 75k miles? Typically don't carry excessive amounts of 'stuff'' in the back, used mostly for 'pleasure' driving. Don't know if I should replace them because of mileage or age of vehicle? Last time I looked at them, about 2 months ago, they don't appear to be leaking.

 

Also, if suggestions are to replace, with 'original' or what other manufacturers?

 

Any thoughts or suggestions?

It depends on if they're gas shocks or liquid-filled shocks. If they're liquid then you'll know when they're bad because they'll leak. If they're gas shocks, get on the rear bumper and bounce up and down, then hop off. If it bounces more than once or twice, it's time to replace them.

the industry standard to suggest shock replacement is 50k miles.

 

Sears sells Monroe which should be a big improvement

I replaced mine with Rancho RSX's. I've been really pleased with them. They're a really nice shock.

I just changed my Monroe Reflex's out for some Monroe Gas Magnums. They're so much better. A little stiffer but the thing brakes, accellerates, and turns with much more stability.

I changed mine to Bilstiens about a month ago at 40,000 miles. The OEM's were shot. I got the replacements at Autozone for $60.00 apiece.

I guarantee if you pulled any one of your OEM's off you would find that they have no rebound left in them. When I pulled mine at 70K they were ALL shot. You could compress them all with one hand. The OEM shocks are complete crap.

 

I put on a set of Bilsteins and couldn't be happier.

Hey all. My truck is quickly approaching the 100K mark and is on the original shocks. I know, I know, that's too long!

 

The truck is a Z71. Is there any specfic type of Bilstein shock to get? Or are they all "the same." I.E. offroad, gas, or whatever, etc.???

 

Anyone know of a place to get them even cheaper than autozone (like an ebay seller or online store?)

I really like to monroe reflex's compared to OEM. Changed mine at 100k and the OEM's were shot. I do mostly highway driving. Do a search on here, i think there's a poll oo "what shocks do you have".

Bilstein HD here. Actually on my second set. My first set seemed to last around 75K. Much better cornering and towing. A firmer ride but not too firm IMO. If you are looking for a cushy ride, don't get these.

You have received some good advise here but I would recommend that you take a good look at KYB's MonoMax. This is a serious shock with quality features not found in most brands. I would compare them in quality to with Bilstien.

 

A couple of examples of ther quality differences would be:

 

1) The tube of the shock contains no welded seams like most all others. This means the inside of the tube is pefectly smooth and will provide a better and longer lasting seal with the piston.

 

2) The loops on the ends are solid, not welded. This means there is not chance of the weld letting go and the loop opening up. A real common problem with other brands if they receive HD use. ( of course the solid loop is welded to the tube but the loop itself is solid)

 

You will have to make up your own mind but I would certainly suggest you look at KYB.
