Amsoil?

I just took delivery of a NBS 2007 2WD 2500HD CCSB with the 6L Gas and 6l90 Trans.

I ran Mobil One Synthetic in my old '00 half-ton w/ the M1 synthetic filters, and changed it out every 3,000 miles. I know that was a little bit of overkill, but when I started doing it in 2001 it wasn't much more expensive to do an oil change with synthetic in my driveway than it was to have it professionally changed with conventional oil at a jiffylube or the like.

In the years since I've become more busy, and synthetic oil has become much more expensive. Since I started to frequent these forums I have seen people mention AMSOIL in a few threads, and have visited their website and ordered a catalog a few weeks ago.

I like the idea of a Synthetic which claims 15-25k mile oil drain intervals (so that I can still do the work myself without having to crawl underneath my truck every 6 or 10 weeks). I also like that their products are priced about the same as Mobil One (the filters are a bit pricey, but given an oil change every 25k miles it would work out to cost less than changing with conventional every 3-6k miles). I also like that they're selling a truly synthetic product, not something filtered and processed to "synthetic specifications" a la Castrol Syntec...

My question for you forum-goers (I'm posting this in the heavy and light-duty truck forums) is:

Does anybody have a different perspective I've overlooked, or have anything negative to say about AMSOIL and/or their products?

You'd be hard pressed to find any negative comments about Amsoil. Its a great oil. Remember though, you still have to change the spin-on filter every so often. I would recommend doing oil analysis' for a while to determine how long you can safely go between oil changes.

I did the same as you are doing about 2 years ago. I had been using Castrol Syntec for years and when I bought my Wife's Yukon XL, I wanted something better. I researched other brands and came down to Amsoil. I do not run it at extended intervals because the truck gets driven only about 6K a year so I change it based on time not miles.

Just as with the previous reply, I would not recommend you running the filter for 25K. A good quality filter such as Wix is designed for a life of about 6K max. I am sure the Amsoil filter is great but I run a CARQUEST (WIX) and change the filter only at 3 months and then do a complete change at every 6 months.

You may wait and read some other replies from others who know more about the Amsoil filter. From what I do know it was developed along with Wix and to my knowledge, they mfg it for Amsoil.

I'm thinking that I won't be able to rack up 25k miles a year - so I would end up changing filter and oil annually. My estimation is that I might run about 15k miles a year...

I've used it and never had a problem, but I use Mobil 1 now. I can get it at Wal-Mart and it's cheaper. Fully synthetic also. It's just a matter of convenience. With Amsoil, I bought a case and had to store it until the next change.
