02 Yukon - Ticking Noise From Hole Over Driver's Head

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Yukon SLT. Had it since it was new. Just recently I was sitting at a traffic light and heard a ticking sound like a small fan. It seems to be coming from the small hole/vent in the headliner to the left of the driver's head.

What is that hole anyway??

The noise doesn't seem to have any relation to Heat or A/C settings. Does seem most noticeable when cold in morning. I can tap that little plastic cap and get a different sound, so I'm pretty sure that's the source.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Ken

That's the intake fan for the climate controls...It goes bad from time to time.

There *may* be a TSB on it. Hopefully, somebody more organized than me will have it handy.

Further research turned up the needed info:

It is called an aspirator, and it is a sensor for the automatic climate control system. The part number is 15029252, and there is a new part number of 25771194. It is $26.81 on GM Parts Direct.

Tells me what I need. Hopefully helps some of you.

Anybody having any problems with this darn thing. I looks like a mic/ speaker above the driver. It started making a buzzing/fan like noise the other day, and it has been driving me crazy. It's not anything drastic, but it is annoying. Can everybody hear this fan working?

I found this on the web:

Document ID# 1639237

Subject: Buzz Noise From Headliner Above Driver - keywords ac air aspirator cover fan grille HVAC interior microphone sensor speaker temperature vent vibration #PIT3511 - (03/29/2005)

Models: 2000-05 Cadillac Escalade

2002-05 Chevrolet Avalanche

2000-05 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2000-05 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Dealer or customer may comment that they have a buzz or vibration noise emanating from the headliner in an area that looks like microphone or a speaker.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The plastic escutcheon grill, which is round and about the size of a half dollar and located just above the driver to the left, is the interior ambient temperature sensor. The sensor is used in conjunction with the automatic HVAC (C68). On occasions, this sensor has been known to make a buzz or rattle sound. The sensor uses a small fan to pull air over the sensor. This buzz noise may be intermittent.

Although it may not be possible to alleviate all of the buzz or noise from this sensor, Engineering has found that if the sensor is installed incorrectly that it may bind and cause the fan to make a buzz noise. Remove the sensor and while doing so check for any binding. Reinstall the sensor and re-test. If the noise is still present, the sensor itself may be noisy and require replacement.

If you can hear it, it's bad. Take it in and let them fix it.

Well, it is so minor, that I was wondering if most people can hear it. If they can, then it must be normal. I don't want them messing with my rig without any "real" reason. I will wait and see if I can still hear it tomorrow on my way to work. If I can, then I'll drop by at my "favorite chevy dealer". Thanks!

Those things are prone for failure......so many on the board have had the same issue.

I did on my truck when I was out West a few years ago.....drove me nuts on the return drive home (36hrs).
