Anyone out there play a guitar? Something I've noticed over the last several years is how some people are so hellbent on Gibson and totally hate fender and trash talk Fender. And you tlak to the guys who are hardcore Fender lovers, they always say they love Gibson but nothing sounds like a Strat. I rarely hear people put Gibson down except the people that don't like Fender or Gibson, but I hear a lot of Gibson people put Fender down. Anyone else ever notice this? It's almost has bad as the whole ford and chevy relationship.

I like both guitar companies however I prefer Fender. I think both have a very unique sound and both are great guitars. It just seems Gibson players don't like to admit the Strat is just as big, if not bigger that a Les Paul or SG.

Anyone else notice this about some Gibson lovers?

I belong to Talkbass.com forums and you hear the same things about Fender basses vs. everything else. The fact of the matter is that Fender isn't better than Gibson or vice versa. It all depends on the tone you're searching for. A LOT also has to be said of the person playing the instrument. I'm a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan and he could make his "Wife"(Strat) talk. By comparison, I also love Derek Truck's sound and he plays a Gibson SG. They, soundwise, couldn't be much further from each other in the blues vein.

I remember reading an interview with Eddie Van Halen. He invited Ted Nugent over to his 5150 studio and Ted wanted to see Ed's Frankenstein guitar and hear the Marshall plexi head. Ed played it and then handed the guitar to Ted who the played it. Even though the rig was Ed's, when Ted played through it using Ed's guitar, guess what? It sounded just like Ted Nugent playing Eddie's rig! It's all in your hands, literally!

In my opinion they're both some of the most versatile guitars out there. In my experience, strats tend to have more of a thinner funky/bluesy tone with a lot of mids, while the Les Paul has a fatter tone with more low end, and less mids. It really depends on the style you're playing, and the tone you're looking for.

In my experience, most guys that play Les Pauls tend to be more metal players, where a thin tone really doesn't work at all, hence the fender trashing. Personally I like both for different reasons, but my all time favorite guitar has got to be the Tele. I just love the tone. But I'm a bass player at heart, and nothing comes close to the fretless jazz bass tone. (Jaco)

As long as we're talking about music I might as well pitch my band a little. You can listen to us on our myspace: Colour Reporter . Those recordings are about a year old. We're going into the studio to record a full album later this month. One of the guitarists was playing a Fatstrat, the other was playing a Tele Deluxe (the one with the 2 humbuckers). Sorry for the long post, I just get excited about music. :)

I love the sounds from both companies. You guys sound good. Here is a link to a really goofy guy that can really play a strat.

I love music and when I'm not racing or playing with my trucks, I'm playing(well trying to play) music. Someday hopefully I will be able to play really well and have a few nice guitars.

Sometimes wonder what slash and angus young would have done without their gibson? Those guys can play!!

the best guitarist .. can make a crappy guitar sound good ... (it's not the tool so much, as how you use it)

No idea, but Jimi Hendrix used a Fender and he'd show anyone who plays a Gibson how to really play guitar.

IMO he's the best there was.

Maybe if Hendrix wasn't dead, he could show you. Slash and his Les Paul destroys Hendrix.

Absolutley the best guitarist I've ever seen, and I've seen many. SRV was head and shoulders above the rest. He's dead and we can't get John BonJovi on a helicopter, no justice.

You know, when you're right, you're right! You have no idea how hard that made me laugh!

I own not one...but two Fender Stratocasters, one of them (black 1994) California built. I love the tone of the Stratocaster and I believe it is one of the finest electric guitars ever built. When talking about classic guitar players don't forget Clapton and even John Mayer. IMO the tone of a Strat (American built ones, not those cheapy ones that everyone buys their kids) is unmatched by any.

That being said I will probably never again buy another *new* Fender guitar. I believe the company is spiraling downward quickly. They put too much stock in cheesy marketing, and their guitars are much over priced for the product. I don't not believe a new Fender Stratocaster should be selling for a grand, but they are. I paid $599 for mine back in 1994 and that was as high as they should go. Obviously reissue and custom models are of a different breed, but speaking about the standard American built Strat (which is the only way to go IMO) $1000 is a bit on the absurd side. Plus looking at my guitars you can see I am left handed. Fender does not cater to lefties all that well.

I haven't really played much at all over the last few years, but if I did and decided to pick up a guitar Carvin would hands down be the way I went. I also really do like the Gibson guitars from a looks standpoint, but I never cared for the feel. I don't like the how the strings come across the guitar at and angle.

Also, I will definitely say SRV was one of the greatest guitar players ever, but if we're speaking from straight out skills standpoint than the "greatest" list must include Petrucci, Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson and yes John Mayer.

    • I don't drive this truck on a regular basis since I have a new company truck with no out of pocket fuel or maintenance cost. Yesterday I got it out to run some errands and got the title message on my DCI. A quick Google search suggested to first clean the Map Sensor. I pulled it out and it was sooty so cleaned it up and reinstalled it. Issue not resolved. My OBDII is a couple years old so didn't see any codes. Today I took it to a friend at AutoZone to get him to check it with his reader. It had the following codes: P20C3 P02BB P221F Stating the most likely solution is to replace diesel emission fluid (DEF) tank assembly.   So, I guess a trip to the dealer is necessary. I read where there was a backorder on these tank assemblies several years ago so hope that has been resolved.
    • Are you using a weight distribution hitch system with your trailer as that alone can change the actual tire pressure requirements needed. It would prove interesting to see what the actual individual axle weights are on your truck when you are hooked up to the trailer. In fact when your hooked to the trailer, typically if anything unless it has a large capacity weight distribution system that is over cranked, often the weight on the front axle will be less when hooked up vs driving empty and certainly if one doesn't have a weight distribution hitch. Really the only times one may get up there with weight on the steer axle is if there was a snow plow mounted on the front or a motorcycle on a rack or with a very large jockey tank full of fuel at the front of the box that transfers a bit of its weight to the front axle.    And of course your tires carry more weight for a given tire pressure due to their size vs a stock sized tire so there is that to take into the equation as well.
    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
    • Like others have said, they will all leak. Mainly at the corners.   I have owned several and the best has been my current one. Revolver x4
