07-08 Rearview Mirror Swap

Is it possible to swap out a regular 07-08 Silverado Mirror for one that has the auto dimmming and temp/compass and it would work right? Anybody done this?? Only feature I have on mine is onstar of course.. I know where I can get one with the temp/compass, but my main concern is that the sensor for the temp and such is not inside the mirror itself??? any help would be useful. thanks

Others may have better information on this.

I, too, seek this for my 2008 GMC 1500 WT. No compass, no temp. on my new GMT900.

I asked the salesman if I could just go to parts and purchase this rear view mirror and swap. His answer was that the sensor for the temperature was someplace else and that I would need another wire going to my mirror plus installation of the temp. sensor. Basically, the answer was no, unless I was will to spend a lot of cash.

Stupid bean counters at GM. If they only offered vinyl seats and vinyl carpet on a 1LT and other upscale models, I would have purchased this model. And put more money into GM coffers to boot.

Or at least GM could have offered a package as an option for this.

I can live without the temp./compass but it is a neat feature.

If the mirror is at all like the 06 mirrors, it is possible (And not that expensive).

I had to buy the sensor (About $20), and run wiring from where I mounted it, through the firewall, and up to the mirror. By far the hardest part of the whole project was finding the correct size pins that would fit into the harness that plugs into the mirror. It took me almost a year of searching online, searching junk yards, searching ebay, and asking at the parts counters of numerous dealers (Chevy apparently doesn't tell the dealers anywhere what size the pins are). I finally found a service department that was willing to take a few minutes, and help me figure out which pins fit (Headwaters GMC in Livingston, MT - Thanks!).

For anyone that is curious about what part # the pins are, sorry, but the dealer found them in a small unmarked container, so I still don't have the correct part #.

I can live without it, but I got one offered to me and I was curious as to what I would have to do to make it work. If I gotta run a sensor and all that good stuff I'm not gonna even fool with it...

I don't know why they don't make this standard. Come on GM bean counters. Gimme a break.

And if not standard then a simple option upgrade. Prewire the darn thing and let the rest of us go purchase from GM Parts, the new mirror.

Don't get me wrong I do like my 2008 GMC Green Truck.

I understand how you could be unhappy with feature content on the WT models, but from what I can tell they have a lot more going for them than my dad's 06 Ford F150 XL company truck.. talk about a bare bones ride!!

Find someone who wants to trade out. I took my compass/temp mirror out because I hated the auto dimm feature. Ordered the plain one out of a WT and love it.

You are correct.

I did look at Ford and I do qualify for Ford X-Plan and Ford Fleet pricing (one or the other and not both together). But the bean counters at Ford are worse than the bean counters at GM. And yes, one has to accept the fact of fewer options with a WT.

It was mandatory that I get 4 items. The rest are gravy.

1. Vinyl Seats

2. Vinyl Flooring

3. Factory Satellite Radio

4. Power Windows

Ford fell short on one or two of the above items depending on how I ordered thru Ford.

GM came thru much better.

The mirror is minor. But me, I do like it. And would have purchased it in any model or upgrade if available with stated above.

To me I think mine has all the std options i need, however I have the LS. And I certainly don't think is was worth 1-2K extra for the LT with a couple minor options that includes the compass/temp mirror, foggys, extra storage and oil and volt guages. But for the price I paid for my truck being a LS it should've came with all these options. But I guess its GM's way of making up for lost money... Besides I can do all these minor LT mods for 1/4 the price..

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
