Suburban Advice

Hi,

I'm a newbie with a 99 Suburban. As soon as I bought it found it that it needed a new transfer case. No worries, I'll get over it. Is there anything else I should know about this vehicle, stuff I should check out now to make sure all is ok before a long trip.

Also, can anyone comment on any way to match a specific part number or serial number (like a transfer case) back to the original vehicle it was installed on. I think that a mechanic may have change my transfer case out of my suburban while it was in for steering work.

Welcome to another Suburban guy. I just traded a '99 for a new '08. I love 'em!

 

There are guys on this forum that are WAY more technical than I am, but I would suggest looking at the transmission. I'm very good about oil changes and tire rotations and little things, but I never did anything to the transmission. Too late in the game I read the owners manual that suggests tranny oil and filter changes every 50k and I never did it. As a result, I started having problems at about 162k (slipping). Most was solved by adding fluid, but that was an area I just never looked at. Won't happen again, but I'd bet there are some other folks out there like me.

 

I changed the oil EVERY 5k. At about 100k, I switched to synthetic (Mobile 1). NEVER burned a drop - always full at the next change. I was still getting 15 mpg in town and 17-18 on the hiway when I traded at 164,000.

 

I put in a new fuel pump and a new radiator around 140k (fuel pump died and radiator was leaking). Other than that, no problems. Keep it serviced.
