Dealership Offering To Add (a48) Rear Sliding Window, Electric

I am in negotiations with an area dealership on a 08 Sierra All-Terrain. The truck is identical to what I'm looking for however it does not have the (A48) Electric Rear Sliding Window. The dealership said they can have their factory authorized repair shop replace the solid rear window with the OEM factory sliding window. The electric control switch apparently replaces the rear defogger switch. Said it would cost $250 dollars to install.

Is this a good idea? Should I fear possible leaks or issues since this wasn't installed at the factory? I actually, believe it or not, use the rear sliding window in my current truck.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd certainly trust my dealership to do this. It's not a very complicated procedure (at least for a service department), and if it's what you want then go for it. In the unlikely event that there are any leaks, it will be covered under warranty

I would add it for sure if they can do it,I won't buy a truck without a sliding rear window,I use mine all the time.

On the switch however,It does not replace the rear defogger switch,The switch for the sliding rear window is located in the overhead console,the switch for the rear defogger is in the HVAC controls in the dash.

You'll still need the rear defogger switch for your heated mirrors.

Rich is correct (of course). Live2, I think what the dealership meant was the the sliding rear window isn't available with the rear defroster. As Rich said, you'll still have the rear defroster switch for the heated mirrors, but you won't have the defrost feature in the rear window. I was concerned about this initially, but I've yet to have the rear window frost up; and it's been COLD this winter.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. The info you gave is what I was looking for. The truck has a sunroof but no rear window. I understand now keeping the rear defrost switch for the heated mirrors. So....where would the switch for the electric rear window be place? Is there a "blank" punch out spot for it?

I have an aftermarket slider in my truck, and it leaks sometimes, suck. I miss the rear defogger especially since it is winter, and I can't see out of the back window, that sucks! My .02 cents.

Its in the overhead console on the opposite side of the sunroof switch,They would probably have to order you a new overhead console so it has the provision for the switch.

Somewhat unusual location for the switch I might add, I was looking at a new truck with a sliding rear window and we could not find the switch for quite some time.

Personally, I'd lean towards NOPE...DON'T DO IT.

Too any variables to think about, plus it's not just a plug and play. Way too much work to be done for only $250...they are not telling you something.

With the kind of money you are looking at spending here, i.e. the purchase price of a new truck, make sure they get you the right truck at the right price. That means, get one with a slider from the factory. Your dealer can dealer trade for this, or you can just simply wait until they get their next batch of trucks into inventory.

IMO, the last thing anybody should be doings is disassembling a brand-new truck. You are just looking for problems...
