Console Lid Swap

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a 2002 Silverado LT with the center console. The lid on this is very slick. Anything placed there flies off. My wife has a 2005 Suburban LT with the center console also, but the lid is recessed and has a rubber insert which makes it much more usable. Cell phones, sunglasses, etc can be placed there temporarily and don't go zinging off in to space.

The lids don't mount the same. I don't think they are interchangeable. It looks like the lids are mounted to the console liner. Is there a way to swap pieces and parts to get the more usable lid?

Thanks

I think I'd hit my local boneyard and just find a Suburban console to swap into it. Probably easier and cheaper than trying to retrofit something into yours. Just a thought.

Nope.............GM in its wisdom and cost cutting got rid of the rubber insert!

Also note the whole armrest/console deal is 1 piece so swapping the lid

is near impossible with out some imagination and major surgery !

Buying a new unit from another year is $pendy at $450 !

Hmmm, so they de-contented a 2002 from a 2005 to save money? I suppose they needed the money to pay for that time machine huh? My 2000 also did NOT have any rubber insert.

I had the same problem. I would put my cell phone in that little tray and hit the brakes and spend 10 minutes after I got to my destination trying to fish it out from in between the seats. My solution was some of that rubber sink mat stuff. Here's some pics of the stuff and with it in the console:

The stuff under the mat in the truck is duct tape. You could probably use some mounting method that blends in a little more.

Thanks for the pics. I think my wife has some of that stuff. I'll look for some clear double sided tape. The console swap is still an option, but if it's too expensive, I'll just use the shelf liner.

Thanks

if you can find it locally or patient enough to order online you can get a rubberized coating which you can spray or brush/paint on.. i beileve another member did something fairly similar on their console with good results.

The '03-'07s with bucket seats had a rubber mat in the middle of the console lid,Someone must have taken out the mat from your '04,It should of had one.

The '99-'02s with bucket seats did not have a rubber mat,and like zsk said, things tend to slide off.

Thanks for the info. I see thsat ist's for a 2003 and up. That likely won't fit mine. I'll try the shelf liner and see how it works out.

Another possibility. Many auto parts stores and big retailers sell a silicon mat that is designed to 'grip' your phone while it lays on the dash. Probably wouldn't be hard to trim to fit. Just a suggestion.
