Fuel Pump Whine

I know this is probably a fairly common topic, but my fuel pump in my 1998 K1500 just suddenly started making a louder whine than usual. My fuel pump has always had a whine to it, and I thought most all GM trucks do/did make that noise, but now the whine is clearly audible in the cab (almost sounds like a siren of some sort). Isn't this a sign my fuel pump is going to die soon, or what? Thanks!

My neighbors 98 K3500 makes so much noise I can hear it from 400 feet away. Still pumps fuel. Mine is quiet, sometimes makes a small buzz noise, but most of the time she is quiet. I woudlnt worry about it until it stops pumping.

I had one that whined loudly for 100K miles and I sold it at 200K still running. I have had them fail after being quiet for 30K. No rhyme or reason to it.

Yeah, I guess I'll just wait for it to die. The thing is, I'm going to be making a round trip of around 275 miles to and from out of town this weekend and would rather have it replaced before going out of town if it's going to die soon.

If it will give you peace of mind, maybe it would be worth replacing.

Well, since it appears the noise doesn't seem to mean much, I'll just go for it...at least I have AAA if I need it. I went out a while ago and cranked it up to see if it'd do it again, but it didn't get any louder than usual while idling (I gave it a few revs, too, to see if it'd make a difference) for a few minutes. If/when I need a replacement, do you guys think it'd be okay to go with one of those $60 (shipped) pumps off eBay? They have a year warranty, orat least the one I was looking at did. I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a new pump if it can be avoided. Thanks again for the help, everyone!

if you buy just pump like i did it was only 50 at advanced auto and 7 for a new strainer

Mine is loud as can be too, but still works fine....Our 99 Tahoe was the same, my 95 CK was the same too.....no worries mate.........like they say...if it ain't broke....don't fix (or attempt) it....

It hasn't whined loud at all today, maybe that's a good sign. If it starts doing it more frequently I'll probably replace it just because I don't want my truck to sound like a run down vehicle, but I understand that it'd still be working fine.

I have a 02 yukon SLT, and it whines like no other too. 183k and still running on the stock one.

Personally, I'd replace it. Nobody likes being stranded! Fortunately when mine went out in my old '00 Tahoe (about 100k), I was at work. Not a big deal. But it was starting to get rather loud before it died. Although I have heard them get much louder and still pump fuel just fine.

 

But that's just me, I hate waiting for things to fail.

I have been told to change the fuel filter when the whine gets loud .Been told my a few different mechanics that when filter starts getting plugged up the pump will get noisy!(?)

The fuel pump went out on my '03 after it started whining loudly at about 60K miles. The new pump has whined since new and now has over 100K on it and working fine. You'll probably be fine.

I had the fuel filter changed literally a week ago when it got clogged and I had absolutely no power so the filter is fine. Do you think the pump might have gotten damaged by the filter being clogged? I still haven't heard another peep from the pump, so I'll just quit worrying about it until it starts wailing again.
