2007 Gm Truck Questions

Howdy Y'all. In the next year or so i may be in the market for a newer truck. Although i have always owned fords, i am thinking of buying a GM due to ford triton engine problems. I have never owned a GM before and have a lot of questions about the 07(new body style) silverado/sierras.

1.) Are there any problems with the 5.3's, such a piston slap or ejecting spark plugs for no reason?

2.) How good are the 4l60-e transmissions? I have heard that there is no way to check or change the fluid in these, is this true?

3.) What rear axle do the 5.3 equipped trucks have in them and what is the most common gear ratio?

4.) Do the 5.3's really get 15 mpg city and 20 hwy as advertised?

5.) Does the current gen. trucks still use torsion bar front ends on 4x4's or have they gone to a-arms like everyone else?

6.) How do you like your truck over all, anything major go wrong with it?

i appriciate your responses

1. Not sure about piston slap on the new motors, but I haven't ever heard of spark plugs ejecting.

2. You can check and change the fluid in the 4l60e, not sure why you would've heard differently...? I have a couple hundred miles short of 170k on mine, and absolutely no slippage, so if you don't beat on it, it'll last a long time.

3. They come with the 10 bolt semi-floating rear axle. Most common gear ratio is probably 3.73, but you can get 4.10's also. (not sure if you can get the 5.3 and 3.42's?)

4. Can't answer that one...

5. The NBS trucks (GMT-900/'07+) don't have torsion bars anymore, they have coils. The 4x4's also got rack and pinion steering for the new body style

6. I love my truck, but it definitely ain't new...

By the way, welcome to the site. :D

I have piston slap in the mornings like crazy! Other than that I love it. They also have coil over springs now and I think that they made the front end 2" wider. I also get around 16 in town and 18-20 highway.

1) Mine doesn't, and I've never heard of a spark plug ejection system, I don't think it would be very useful though, 'cept for hunting birds.

2) Just as good as any other automatic transmission. I can change and check the fluid in mine. (Plus it has a 5 yr, 100,000 mile warranty, how bad could it be?)

3) 3.23:1, 3.42:1, 3.73:1, 4.10:1 I'd say center two are the most common. Go with 3.73:1 or the 4.10:1 for towing.

4) Not 4x4's

5) All GM trucks have had A-Arms since '88ish, The new ones DO use coil springs, which I think is the real question.

6) I love it, no.

Mind you I've had my truck just over a month...

1. None so far!

2. Bulletproof tranny. My Dad has one in his Van and has never had any issues. Likewise reading on here, most people have great experiences with the tranny.

3. Read others. I have 3.73s.

4. Mine gets 14.7 with city driving almost exclusively. With only 1K miles on it, still has some improvement room as the engine breaks in. Will get its first highway test this weekend (outside of it's trip home)

5.Coil springs.

6. I love my truck. Paint does seem to chip somewhat easily. But then again, the rocks that hit my truck were at 75 MPH. :D I haven't had to haul anything heavy yet. Engine power is great. AFM works and you can barely tell when it switches. Overally, the hardest part is parking in the garage. Truck is much bigger than my 00 Cougar!

Good luck with your shopping.

I am creeping up on 12,000 miles with my 2007 4x4 extended cab classic.

3) I have the 5.3 Flex fuel (not tried E-85 yet) and 3.42 gears

4) I do average 16 mpg or so around town and if I set the cruise at 60-65 on the hwy, I can get 20 mpg or a bit better. 75-80 really kills the MPG.

Of course these numbers are from the DIC.

Former 2x F250SD owner here, now a (much much) happier GMC Sierra owner....

1) No, GM is still doing R&D to figure out how to turn spark plugs into mortar shells. Ford beat them to it.... :D

4) I have a 5.3 (and 4x4). I average +/- 15 around town, and get 19-20 highway (summer). Subtract 1 mpg for winter mileage.

6) ZERO problems... purchased new in '07. Actually, that's what delighted me the most with my first GMC (this one). Having driven Fords for decades, the last two I had were terrible. Looking thru my papers, the last two Fords I had had no less than 4 warranty visits to the dealer (having to leave vehicle there for at least one day) within the first 4 months. So far, this GMC has no clue wht the inside of a GMC dealership looks like (minus a few oil changes and tire rotation). I am only sorry I hadn't made the swich much sooner to GM.

A little piston slap when it's cold - but nothing major at all. No ejecting spark plugs.

2.) How good are the 4l60-e transmissions? I have heard that there is no way to check or change the fluid in these, is this true?

Flawless. Yes you can check the fluid in them.

3.) What rear axle do the 5.3 equipped trucks have in them and what is the most common gear ratio?

Mine has 3.73 and it's great. 3.73 is the most common.

4.) Do the 5.3's really get 15 mpg city and 20 hwy as advertised?

Mine does - and it's a 4x4. On highway I average about 21. In city I'd say around 14-15.

6.) How do you like your truck over all, anything major go wrong with it?

I did a lot of research about trucks. My brother wanted me to get a Dodge. My buddy had an F250 and it was "ok". After a couple months of research, I ended up with this truck. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Sometimes I wish I would have got a 6.0L 3/4 Ton, but I wouldn't have any use for a 3/4 ton anyways. Hope that helps.

1) My old truck had the piston slap (I think). It wasn't a big deal, just a little annoying. My new one does not have it. (Knock on wood :troll: )

2) No transmission problems for me. Only 16k on it, so maybe not a good test. Agree with others about fluids and whatnot.

3) Mine has the 3.73 rear end. I saw some other trucks that had the 3.42. Old truck had it. I prefer the 3.73. A little more giddyup in the saddle.

4) I've never seen 15/20 mpg with mine. But my city driving is a lot of stop and go. I got 12.5 and now get 11 with E85. My highway speed is always Interstate at 75 so my mileage suffers there. I can get 14.5 E85 / 15.5 E10. My speculation is that could be much higher at 55 mph. I don't think my foot would get 20, but who knows. Probably 18-19.

5) Ditto)

6) I love this truck. Of course I went from a RCSB 4.3L V6 to my CC 5.3L V8. That may affect my opinion a little :troll: I don't drive in mountains, but Southwest Iowa is rather hilly. It never is underpowered or has to do rediculous downshifting up a hill. Its a bitch to park, but that's not Chevy's fault. I much prefer it to my boss's 08 Tundra, and a co workers 04 Dodge. One of the company trucks is a 08 Ford CC. Mine seems better in every department: looks, power, comfort, cockpit layout. But I am biased. :rollin:
