Sell It Or Keep It?

hey guys, I'm in a bit of a crossroads on what I want to do with my truck. I have about 2 years left on payments, but it's at 96K now.

This truck has been the absolute best vehicle I've ever owned. I bought it with 44K on the odometer a few years ago and had not horrible but not good credit. now I have EXCELLENT credit (800 rating) and would like to get something else. however, I also would like to get a $20K boat as well.

what I'm thinking is payoff the truck in 2 years and then swap the payment for a boat or just wait until about 2 years down the road when I'm making enough money to have both a new truck and a boat as well as Jenny's Yukon if we still have it at that time or get something else for her.

we are not hurting by any means and always have money to put into savings, however I never want to over stretch myself because you never know.

anyway, it's hard to let a great truck like this go and I've taken very good care of it with changing the oil every 4-5K with Mobil 1 full synthetic, lubing chassis every oil change and changing and flushing the transmission fluid twice since I've had it. however......with it about to go over 100K things may start to head south with the ole girl.

POS get rid of it!

jk I installed my custom tune at 120K miles, and I now have 144K. People thought I was crazy for putting in a performance tune in a vehicle this old. I beat the living crap out of this thing and it keeps going. I say you should pay it off and just fix shit when it breaks.

To be honest, the only way I would tell you to get rid of it is if you just want something new. You and I both know that that truck will be running for a long time unless something (accident, flood, etc.) happens.

I'd recommend hanging onto 'er. IF/WHEN things start to head south, dump 'er then. 'Til then, keep the reliable girl around.

very true. Even in which case if something goes say tranny or small things here or there try to think how much you would be spending on a new truck instead of using say maybe 300-500 bucks here or there which would be one months payment with a new truck. My uncle went through this delima with his f150 he had and he went and got a new truck because he didn't want to fix the oil pressure gauge and now hes over 20k in debt because he didn't want to spend a few hundred bucks.

Keep the old gal for a few more years. She'll treat you well, just watch the Tranny.

Damn, I HOPE you know he was talking about his truck.

I'd keep it. 96K really isn't much for a newer vehicle that has been maintained. Most vehicles seem capable of 200K+ these days if they are taken care of. I'd prepare to pay for things like ball joints and brakes, but that truck should have a lot of life left in it.

thanks fellas.

I'd plan on getting an '04-'06 GMC Sierra Z71 quad cab. just want the extra room and a newer vehicle.

I think I've mad my mind up that I want to keep it. watch me change my mind in another year though.

all good points guys. thanks again

I do need to do things like shocks and paint the roof of the cab since it's starting to fade. other than that there really isn't anything that needs to be addressed.

+1 on keeping the 99. Trucks will almost last forever, engines, tranmissions, can always be swapped out if needed. I think GM Performance Parts still has a HT383 (most-state) legal conversion kit if you need more power.

Trade-in value has tanked, but I think that general used market isn't yet yielding any bargains. Most that are "dumping" their trucks/SUV's probably did the same with those loans as they did with their house mortgages; way upside-down in the loan and is still asking value of 6-9 months ago and they won't budge on the price. Dealers are probably also doing a similar no-budge, as they paided top $ on those trades even as late as 2 months ago.
