Rent A Car Is A Piece

as some of you know my truck is in the shop getting some work done because assholes dont allow me to have nice things for too long. anyway my rent a car is a 2006 chevy cobalt ls. It has a cd player...thats about the only positive thing about the car...however tonight the cd player broke. GREAT! cant catch a damn break can i. And its not broke because i was a jackass and shoved cd's in there or anything but the unit itself stopped working. im thinking of calling upset and saying i want an escalade :banghead: but with the recent luck someone would back into it (most likely my sister) and i would somehow get stuck footing the bill. YAY lol One good thing about the car that cant break(i dont think at least) is i get 34 miles to the gallon driving this thing. most of the reasons for this is even if i floor it, it does not go anywhere quick so i might as well just baby it and most of my driving since im off work is all highway. btw for those of your wondering from the last topic i posted my sister is me with a wig. how shes engaged i have no idea but i guess everyone likes someone...even if there freakishly freaky. anyway night all if anything else happens ill be sure to let yall know about it

My wife's car was in the shop recently and they gave us a Cobalt, what a POS. Enterprise must be the only reason they make those things because I can't see anybody actually buying one.

Yes people are buying the Cobalt and its for good gas mileage 34 hwy. Most americans has given up SUV's & trucks for a car that get great mileage.

I feel your pain. I ended up with a Cobalt rental car for a weekend a couple years ago...one of the worst rental cars I've ever had. Maybe they've updated them since, but the one I had I don't think would turn as sharp as my x-cab Silverado. They must have used same steering box design they had in my dad's old '80 GMC 3/4-ton, except probably made of plastic this time around. Also, I'm a tall guy (6'3") and have a long torso so by the time I got the seat leaned far enough back that my head didn't rub on the roof, I could just barely reach the bottom of the steering wheel without slouching forward. When I wanted to steer with the side or top of the wheel, I had to hunch over and lean to one side so I could reach the wheel without rubbing my head on the roof! :banghead:

And people WONDER why Nissan, Honda, and Toyota are kicking our butts in car sales. If we ever stop trying to sell total crap, we might be able

I'm sticking with my Japanese cars until then.

Nobody makes a truck that can compete with us. Why the heck do we have our heads up out butts on the car thing?

I dunno either. If your mandatory sterilization rule still applies to stupid people, that might "fix" the problem with the domestic auto manufacturers making shitty econoboxes like the Cobalt.

I agree for the most part. The exception being the Ford Focus. They definitely got that one right. I'll take the pepsi challenge against anything Japanese in it's class. We've had 3 in our family, and they've all been great. The two that are still in the family have 135k and 101k on them respectively, and they're still solid as hell, run great, etc. Anyone that knows me knows i have NO love for Ford. The couple that i've owned other than the focus were complete junk. But when i met my wife she was driving/autocrossing a 2000 ZX3, and it amazed me that it was a Ford. Her Dad has that one now and it's going strong. I picked up a 2001 as a commuter car when i had my TJ, and I'll keep it til falls apart.

Now, all that said, it might not be fair to claim it's an American car, as the Focus was developed by Ford Europe :banghead:

I would guess that they must have made a few updates to the Cobalt over the past couple of years. I test drove an '08 Cobalt LT for my wife (has to reacquire her license) and it was a nice little car. Not really a car that I'd want to do a long trip in, but nice for around town stuff. The 09 Cobalts get a HP and torque increase over the 08's with the standard engine.

agreed 100% although the new Malibus seems to be great cars. GM needs to make good econo 4cyl cars.

We CAN make good cars. We SHOULD make good cars... but we keep getting crap thrown at us that hasn't improved since the horrible 80s. Sure there are a few exceptions but where are the cars that should very well be here by now that compete head to head with the Japanese? The only real competition we have here were all designed in Europe. It's ridiculous that we have to resort to buying a Jap car to get a quality small car after all of the time that has passed. I know this gets the "Buy American" crowd all worked up but that is a long gone idea unfortunately (that is still trumpeted by the unions that got us into half of this mess)

Have you seen the number of parts in a new American car or truck that come from China?

We SHOULD be ashamed.

Why would anyone want a shitbox just to get better mileage? My C6 Corvette gets 30+ highway. Oh yeah when you romp on it... well you know.

    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
    • So, lot's of googling and reading, and a trial fit found, that indeed they hit the newer fatter caliper. I did some re-testing today, and found just 3/16" worth of washers was enough for the wheel to spin freely. I added 2 more on each, and again it spun freely. Tested lock to lock with the 4 washers, about 5/16" not quite the 3/8" Im considering, but pretty close. No issues. I've been looking at the BORA .375" spacers and using extended lugnuts to get back lost thread due to the spacer. All the ET lugs I've seen are all .33" reach inside the wheel lug holes. For those that don't like spacers or think they're unsafe, I think it depends on what type of spacers you're using and making sure you get good quality hubcentric ones, and if you're using bolt on ones, regular mainenance, checking the spacer lugs. Not wanting or needing that much spread. Looking for the minimum that will let me run these rims and tires.  it does look to stick out a little, but I really want put these on. and use the stock all-terrains in the winter.
