Well I am thinking about buying a truck (my first one ever) and need some decision support. Which one would you buy if you had the choice - and why?

I don't want to spend more than 10k on it. It should be a 4x4 and have a V8. I don't want the crew cab. I won't use it as a work truck.

I'm partial to the look of the GMC. That being said, I would buy a 2003 or newer GMC, because thats the year when they changed the look of the grille.......it just looks better IMO.

Just some examples.......

Interesting. I thought that grill was an option.

Nope, they changed it on the 2003 and up models. Before I bought my 2003 Sierra, I was on the fence on whether to buy a Silverado or Sierra, and when they made the change on the 03's my mind was made up......big improvement.

What is the difference between the Chevy and the GMC besides the looks?

Other than looks......they are the same, and GMC's are usually a bit more expensive than Chevy's.

I like the looks of that Chevy HD, but you need to decide if you need a 3/4 ton or not. Will you be towing or hauling? Weather issues near you? Etc.

I guess it all depends on what you want a truck for. If you are using it for towing, get the largest one you can (engine wise), but if you are using it for hauling stuff, then anyone one of the GMC/Chevy will do the job. The Ford will just disappoint you :) , so don't go there. Seriously, look at what you will do with it, and base your decision on that. I am partial to the GMC with the 5.3L engine. Fairly good on gas (better then Ford 5.4L by a long shot), and they are a well built truck. Lots of choices out there, so shop around and good luck.

I thought the same myself. The dealer I ended up with sells both GMC and Chevrolet. I started with pricing a Chevrolet 2008 1500. I ended up with a GMC. I made two trips to dealer. The pricing is exactly the same. At least the Work Truck.

Interestingly, the sales manager at first advised me on 2nd trip after I had obtained a price/printout of Chevrolet, advised me that the GMC was slightly more. Both printouts were exactly the same. I only went for the GMC for the chrome front bumper. So, technically, to get a chrome front bumper on the Chevrolet was more money.

Now, as far as upper scale models, the prices may vary as possibly option packages may vary. Other can chime in on that.

The same saleperson does both Chevrolet and GMC. I had both printouts and they were option for option the same in the Work Truck.

I watched a crash test on the F-150 (97-03), That may change your mind. The Chevy held up much better.
I saw the same thing. The F-150 did very poorly in the crash test, actually it looke horrible. I would go with the chevy unless you don't need the 3/4 ton.

Man, you're kinda comparing Apples to Oranges to Pears aren't ya?

I am a Chevy man, always have been. But I voted the GMC in this case. I feel that if you wanted the towing / payload of a 2500, your requirements would have said something about a boat, camper, toyhauler, etc. Since it didn't, I figured the 1500 would be ok. :D

The Ford would be an ok truck. The only advantage I see it has over the others is the Extended cab. Again, you said you didn't even want a crew cab, so you probably barely want the extended cab. Although you'd be surprised how much you would actually use the extra cab space.

I suppose dollars will dictate a lot, but I'd think the GMC would also be the cheapest here.

Good luck :)

Out all these options I would go with a 2004 GMC Sierra with the 5.3L. I would go with the 2004 because it comes with the rear disc brakes, steering wheel controls, I would makes sure it comes the G80 and 3.73 gears.

Thanks fot all the helpful answers.

I don't plan to tow big trailers, maybe a Sea-Doo or a car trailer from time to time but even a 6cyl would be able to pull it. I plan to use the truck as a dayly driver (so no 6.0L for me) and to haul stuff for the house or the MX-bike around. I really like the extended cab on the Ford, the cab on the GMC and Chevy is a little too big for my taste. I know the engine of the F-150 (almost the same as in my Mustang), that's a plus for the Ford but after watching the crash test on Youtube I am kinda disappointed. Furthermore the front looks weird with that grille, always reminds me on spectacles.

Is there a difference regarding the interior between the GMC and the Silvy?
