Time To Buy?

Hey guys,

I can get a 2008 Tahoe Hybrid right now that stickers for $52780 at supplier price of $50030 minus $6000 incentive, making the bottom line $44030. Is this a good buy? I see some on eBay for $41k or so. Anybody know how low the dealers will go right now? (I'm near Atlanta) Any comments or advice are appreciated!

Thanks,

At first glance, that price doesn't appear to be anything that I would get excited about. In this market, I personally wouldn't buy any truck or SUV for less than 25% off sticker.

I agree with the fella's above. That seems like a lot of money, especially considering the time of year it is. They should be desperate to get rid of it.

I'm not a "hybrid" type of guy, but to each his own. :)

If you want a hybrid for reasons of conscience, blessings on you. The price still seems a bit high, and I agree with VMax that leasing sounds like the better option. Just go into the deal with your eyes open and realize that you've getting unproven technology that may never pay for itself in fuel savings.

GM sales were down 65% in October and they're facing possible bankruptcy; now may be the best time in history to make a deal on a full-sized truck or SUV because the lots are full of them. I just bought a new 2008 Silverado for $12k off sticker price. The local Dodge and Ford dealers are selling trucks for 50% OFF the better-optioned models because they have new models out in 2009 and had to fire-sale the 2008's. That put the squeeze on the GM dealers who won't match the competition but are forced to make deals. In this area you can walk on the dealer lots and they'll offer $10k off sticker on Silverados and Tahoes before they say hello. That will buy lots of gas...

Just my $0.02.

that does seem like a high price because like everyone else is mentioning the economic times we are having are horrible....I was just truck shopping (for the fun of it) and i could have bought a new 08 duramax crew cab short bed, fully loaded for $38k OTD, the sticker was around $50k..im in southern california....just keep shoppin around, you will find something good

If you want a hybrid, you will have to pay for it. They have more incentives on the trucks/SUVs that are not selling. Hybrids are/were selling pretty well.

Also consider what you need. Hybrids seems to really do well for city, but lose much of their advantage on the highway (since it is running gas at that point)... If you are doing a bunch of city driving, it might fit the ticket...

If you really want a Hybrid, lease one.

I would agree here - not sure hybrids have really proven themselves 4,5, or 6 years down the road - what are the costs to maintaining them then?

Price seems high (and I'm in Canada so it should seem good to me :) ) so I'd see what else you can get done on that.

Good luck though - sound like a nice truck ;)

The proper long-term batteries have not been invented that would make the hybrids a viable technology. Replacing the battery units and disposing of the old ones is incredibly expensive.

The six and four cylinder, very green, diesels will be on the market before 2010. That is the way of the future.

1. No, that's a crappy price for that Hybrid. I was offered a NEW Hybrid, 3 weeks ago, at my work (GM Dealership)

MSRP on the Yukon Hybrid was $56,000...General Manager priced me at $35,000...I immediately said NO and walked away...

2. Let's get some pricing going here...because this IS ABSOLUTELY the best time to purchase NEW, ****IF***** you can afford it.

3. Just found out GM's Red-Tag sale is starting 11-4-08...that should boost some rebates.

4. Here's an example of ideal pricing. We have, in our inventory, a 2008 Sierra Crew Cab 4x4, NEW, with 40 miles on it--was a dealer trade.

MSRP $36785

GM Employee $32542

Current rebate $-7500

Subtotal $25042

Chrome Package not wanted (tubes, grille, mirror caps) $-1000

So, that's $24042

And then, I just kept "bothering" a sales manager..."you can do better than that..."is what I kept saying. It works...I'll show you how...

Right now, I'm at $22,942 out the door, for a NEW $36xxx pickup truck. Absolutely unbelievable!! And I was in his office, badgering the manager a little more today.....

REMEMBER...Dealers have *holdback-money* to play with, if a deal becomes tight to make. Many dealers won't mess with holdback, many other dealers WILL use holdback money to close a deal.

To calculate how much holdback money is available on a certain vehicle, Multiply original MSRP by 3%. So, on the 08 Crew Sierra I just priced out, if you take $36785 times 3%, you get $1100 holdback money to mess with. Obviously, they used the holdback money in my pricing of the truck.

THEN, there is ADVERTISING money, which is generally $300 to $400 per vehicle. Good luck subtracting that figure out of the equation, BUT since it is available to deal with, it's really worth a shot.

So, the deal that I presented here, if you take the $24042 price, SUBTRACT ALL holdback money $-1100, you get $22942 total. That means, my Employer keeps the $300 advertising as part of the deal. BUT, as you see, they took ALL the holdback out of the deal.

I, for one, am nauseated with disgust at the attitude of some GM dealerships in my area. I decided to look for a smaller vehicle since I already have a truck, and I need an economical commuter for everyday driving. Because I have a $ 1500 GM card rebate and I got an additional $ 1,000 bonus to my rebate in the mail, I looked at buying a new 2008 Chevy Cobalt LT. There was a$ 1,500 rebate on that vehicle from GM plus $500 manufacturer to dealer bonus cash. Chevy dealers around here are simply horrible!!! They act like they are doing you a big favor selling you a car. One lied outright, denying that there is any bonus cash which he could subtract from the final price. The other conveniently "forgot" about it and had to be reminded. Then he agreed to give it up, but told me that they have a $ 600 dealer fee which will be added to the final price! Plus they were only willing to sell the car at 1 % over invoice. Which, when added to the bogus dealer fee, simply brings the price of the vehicle to the MSRP (=full sticker price)!!!! Are these people really thinking that a customer is so dumb that he will not see through this? Plus of course, they will give me next to nothing for my old car which is in great shape. And forget even talking about the holdback.

Take a look at this:

Hello???????? Anybody home? GM sales for October 08 are down 45%!!!!!!!!!!! Why don't you GM dealers tune back into reality for a moment? Here is a guy who wants to get a decent deal on an econo box, willing to pay cash for it and this is the way you treat him? The company is offering great rebates and its dealers seize this as an opportunity to sell a leftover vehicle at the sticker price?

When will GM finally wake up and realize that one big part of their problematic sales are greedy dealers? I am sick of lying, false invoices, bogus BS outrageous fees, etc. Looks like this customer is going to look elsewhere. I hope that somebody at GM will read this.

End of rant. :)

The new "red tag" sale is utter BS. The '09 trucks are discounted only about $3k from the MSRP and even '08 are discounted less than before.

And smaller vehicles - they are a total joke. GM better come up with a better plan or they will have 60% lower sales in November.

    • I can only guess as well that something was clicked on that brought you to the half ton choices by accident. By all means try again and chose the 3500 and sort out that its the cab and box configuration you want and choose four wheel drive ( rather obvious to have a transfer case ) and to make sure the dually isn't chosen. I find or at least did a couple of years ago when I was sifting through the options that it would sometimes jump ahead after choosing the series of truck and in this case 3500 and skip some of the other initial configuration choices and have to watch the heading bar and sometimes back up by choosing the first in the series of option break downs. I think sometimes the computer will remember items that were last chosen and skip over the first part. Anyway go through it all and depending on the trim level chosen and I think the LT is one that may fall into that where the option of having the 4 high auto transfer case can be chosen, where as a High Country doesn't show that option as it just comes with the fancier ( not necessarily better though in terms of potential problems ) transfer case but for sure both transfer case choices are equipped with high and low range in the HD truck segment. Like Newdude said who works at a dealership, its the half tons that are the ones that will come with the single speed unless certain options or trim levels are chosen that add the two speed transfer case but as your looking at an HD, you don't have to worry about that hot mess.    One item that at least didn't show up and not sure if it does yet or not in the HD options on the manufactures pubic website is the upfitter in cab switch option if one is desiring that. Unfortunately its not wired in at the factory but the panel with the switches is on the dash but the wiring harness to be installed gets tossed under the rear seat to be installed by whomever after the fact to complete the installation.
    • Yesterday we brought home a 6yr  old Havanese dog from a nearby SPCA.  We've had her for 24 hours and we are delighted with how well she is adjusting to her new home.  It  was a huge decision to adopt a dog at this stage in our lives but we believe we made the right choice!   it was reported that her first 6 years were ones of neglect.  I think she's already realizing her life is going to get a whole lot better...  so is ours!
    • I thought I was building a HD 3500 srw, maybe I was lost.
    • No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.
    • It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month.
