Why No 6-speeds Yet?

A local GMC dealer tells me that the 6-speed auto will not be available for the extended cabs (5.3L) until the middle of next year. Why is GM so slow? Ford already has 6-speeds available for their extended cabs. I'm confused.

There coming,there coming!!.....starting with Jan.'09 production they will be in 5.3 reg. & ext.cabs w/the standard or long bed.

They WILL NOT be in ext.cabs w/the short-bed (5'8")

Talked to a couple of dealers myself about the 6 speed. They were trying pretty hard to get me in one on the lot and made it sound like it would be a long time before you would be able to get your hands on 5.3 w/ 6 speed when I knew that production was schedule to start in Jan.

If one of you guys remind too,In mid/late Jan. I can run a locator specing the 5.3/6spd. in an extended-cab,and see if there are any in the "build" process yet.

I can tell you that there are already a lot of 5.3/6spd. crew-cabs out there,we have a few on our lot right now.

No,Not really...Now they sell mostly extended-cab/standard bed trucks (What we use to call "short-bed")

Remember,"Standard-Bed" is now the 6'6" bed,"Short-Bed" is now the 5'8" bed.

Actually, they don't sell many of the "short beds" in the extended cab. They have two short beds. The standard short bed that comes on a extended cab and the short bed that comes on the crew. You can get the shortest bed on the extend cabs and this is the one they are not putting the 6 speed with.

The standard short bed is the most popular.

How do you know that the new 6 speed is the best transmission? The old 4 speed is the most proven one - the new 6 speed is likely to have some issues until they work the bugs out.

So maybe GM is not being stupid in this case. Just dragging their feet a lot.

The only 6 speed that I wish they offered is a smooth shifting 6 speed manual - but that's not likely to happen any time soon.
