Fortunately, the price of gasoline is way down (at least for now), so it encouraged me to make a few changes. I am retiring at the end of the month, and I really like my Silverado HD, which I originally bought to tow our 5th wheel.

We parked the 5th wheel in a city run campground on a year-around basis, so no more towing, or at least not real often. Also, I had too many vehicles.

So, I just sold my Town Car, and the Silverado is now my daily driver....not sure this was the best more but the deed is done.

Anyway, I was wondering what other folks primarily use thier HD trucks for.

I bought an older truck, a 1996 GMC dually 4x4 crew cab.

I want to be able to pull a camper (about 4000 pounds) when I need to, and the dually is more stable on the highway than a single rear wheel truck.

I like the fact that the ton truck can do anything that a 1/2 ton can, but not vice versa.... and the heavier duty suspension, drive train, and brake components should require less maintenance over time, unless of course the truck is used to pull and haul heavy loads constantly.

For me, two main reasons:

1. current truck at the time was about to role 200k kms, so figured if the opportunity came up, time to trade (while it still held some value)

2. tow a 7000lbs travel trailer, but really want to get into a 5th wheel.

Oh, and my wife said yes I could get the 3500HD......I wasn't gonna ask twice. ;)

I retired last Dec. and figured I would get a toy hauler, which I did.My old '77 3/4 tn. GMC pulled it with no problem, the problem was there wasn't any room for my daughter and here daughters 'cause we like to go camping a dirtbike riding.I bought a '95 Suburban K2500 to pull the toy & have everyone ride together, even though gas prices were way high a while back we still used the Burb.Yes,it cost me alot of $ to fill it up but the benefits were well worth it.The toy weighs in at over 7,000 lbs. loaded with bikes and stuff for the weekends. So my point is keep your HD,grin and bear it when filling up the tank,if you go to something smaller you might regret it.

I don't drive an HD, but I've had gobs of GM trucks... Crewcabs, Excabs, and Reg Cabs. They all were just personal transportation that pulled a boat or maybe the occasional race car trailer. I just like the drive of a truck.

Though my '99 C2500 is not an HD, the engine compartment quotes everything as heavy duty. I use mine for work, and everyday driving. I have a utility bed that is loaded down with tools, and I haul my ladders, planks, etc. on top of the ladder racks.

I use my as a DD. The main reason that I bought it was that I was able to get a "stronger" truck and the price was right. Overall the truck has a much higher payload and towing, and also the suspension, trans, cooling, brakes etc all are built to handle so much more than a 1/2 ton. So even with my milage being 12-14 city and 15-16+ hwy vs the better numbers for a 1/2, the true ablity to put 3000-4000lbs in the bed with hurting the truck always makes me feel better. Also I think the ride is not too bad. I know the 1/2 tons ride is better, but I like my ride just fine. So the reason for a HD foe me was, the overall better/stronger parts, and the price was great for me(sticker was a little over $29K, I got mine brand new for $21K out the door).

I forgot to reply to the thread... I bought my HD Dmax so I can tow the crap out of what I want and when I put my foot in it it just hauls a$$!!!!!!! I love my truck! :)

Right price, nice truck, and I'm out of town with work truck 75% of the time, so the other 25% I like to be able to get to where we fish, hunt and go sledding. That and it makes me smile every time I hop in her.

I have had a 67, 69, 74, 00, 02, 04, and a 94 in that order. 2 one tons, 3/4 tons, and the rest 1/2 tons. I like trucks. I have had three "other" trucks that will have to remain nameless as admitting it here would be worse than coming out of the closet at church. (not that I know what that feels like)

Mine is a kind of a rare truck, single cab 4x4 8.1 6spd black with power options so I jumped on it. It's a fun toy, and I can't bare to be without a truck so I figured I might as well get a fun one that can do whatever I need it to.
