Going Up To A 2500hd Maybe...

I stumbled accross a 2001 2500hd LS extended cab 4x4 for sale with 70,000 miles on it. It has the Duramax and Ali combo. They want 13,000 for it and they will give me close to payoff for what I owe on mine. I have my 04 Silverado LT3. It is kind of a down grade on the interior side. What do you guys think I should do? I have always wanted a Dmax. Worried about the injectors since it's past the seven year 200,000 mile warrenty. Thanks

Ask for the service record or PM MS3Dale (probably wrong name but don't remember offhand) with the VIN and he should be able to tell you...

 

Personally if I had the chance to do that kind of trade I would in a heartbeat, but it all depends on if you actually NEED a heavy duty truck.

Well, it's up to you. You've got to weigh the pros and cons of it all. If you're maxing out your current truck or are planning to in the future, it'd be worth it. All I really know is that you've got a beautiful 04 in your sig pic.

Thanks man. I try to keep it looking nice. I don't tow anything to be honest that would require me to have a Duramax other then wood. I could put some air bags on my current truck and probably be good. I just like the Dmax. Is it worth going with an older vehicle?

+1 I second that motion!!! That is a pretty sweet deal you could fall into.

 

I would love to stomp on mustangs and camaro's with a 3/4 ton truck. I helped set up my buddy's F-350 Crew Cab Long box.... 5 inch turbo back magnaflow+Edge w/attitude+K&N intake+piggy backed bullydog chip+propane= 11.8 second 1/4 mile time and a pissed off Mustang GT owner...

 

p.s. plus 27 mpg when not playing

also depending on where you live yes older is ok, In my county diesel's have to pass emissions now if 2007 or newer. Plus all the extra garbage they put on the new ones to keep the hippies happy... damn hippies

If it were a crew cab, there would be no question. It has not hade its injecters replaced. Why do people say that there maintence is expensive? I'm fairly new to Duramaxs. Thanks

Oil changes and general labour on diesels is more expensive.

 

But that's a hell of a deal for a truck. I love Duramaxes. Plus it's an older one, so there will be a lot less TM and abuse stuff on it.

i have a 04 sierra duramax and love it. Bought it new for 36 k. Has unbelievable towing power. Oil changes are about $80 at the dealership here in MI, and I get it changed every 5k miles, even though you can actually go 10k between changes.

 

I have 98k miles on it and have "only" had the following problems: blower fan resister replaced at 95k miles ($400). Two issues with injector wires shorting out, first fix at 50 K second at 97k (second cost me $400- 200 for harness, rest labor)

my fathers got an 01 D-MAX, great truck, really powerful after the 4" exhaust, intake, and edge programmer, and tows anything effortlessly. But, with 150,000 miles, he's on his third set of injectors, and the heavy hauling is finally taking a toll on the allison tranny. and the ride is pretty bumpy on certain highways, especially because of how long the frame is on a crew cab long bed. if you don't need it, i wouldn't do it. i love his truck, and i've personally put almost half of the miles on his truck myself, but i'd never trade his truck for mine. my 5.3 might not be as powerful, but it also doesn't wear me out driving it, and it doesn't turn worse than a cement truck.

 

conclusion, great heavy hauler work truck, not a good daily driver

I would do it in a heartbeat, but I also use a truck for towing a trailer, and you can never have enough towing power. Yeah, a diesel is a bit more to maintain, but if you keep on top of it, like a gasser, you can avoid most problems. My thing with diesels are this: get a diesel if you need a diesel. These engines like to worked, hard. Towing, or utilizing them to their potential is what keeps any diesel happy. Using it for grocery shopping, or driving to and from work with absolutely no load is what will kill this engine. There is this guy at work who has a ford 7.0L diesel truck, and all he does is drive it to and from work, about 20 minutes each way. And he has been having problems with the engine related to carbon build up. I asked why he has a diesel, and his answer was "I like the sound of the diesel as opposed to a gas truck" .

I digressed. Anyway, if you can get a good deal on your truck and the Duramax is sound, go for if you know you want it for what it is intended. My opinion, maybe not somebody else, but that is what makes this board fun .

The novelty will wear away quickly and you will feel stupid for giving up the nicer truck you have now.

There are significant downgrades involved when it comes to ride quality and comfort. The HD trucks are rough riding tanks that you buy if you need them, are insecure, and or have no other hobbies to keep you busy.

If you do buy it contact me in 6 months and tell me if I am right or wrong. Ive seen this happen many times and after the novelty wears off denial sets in followed by misery. I have a few friends with HD trucks and they are alot more for parts and labor. If I need an HD truck someday I will buy one, until then no frickin way.

I don't know...Even though I love the Dmax your not getting a very good deal(It is not bad but definitely not a deal). Around here, 01 Dmaxes go for 11,000.

 

It also has never made sense to me to go from a newer vehicle to an older one. Just my .02

 

Get an 04 or newer Dmax.
