180 Thermostat

I would like to get a cooler operating temp than the factory 210 degrees. I currently have a EDGE EVO programmer.

Can I get a programmer like the DIABLO to adjust temp and keep the EVO just for instant display?

What would happen if I changed out 210 degree thermostat to a 180 degree?

Why do you want a cooler thermastat? What are you trying to accomplish?

Why do you want a cooler thermastat? What are you trying to accomplish?

 

 

Main thing is to get the cooling fan to kick in sooner. I know that the ECM controls this.

I have never had my truck go to 230, and if I did see it go that high on a regular basis, I would probably make a trip to the dealer.

 

Your fuel mileage will probably suffer with a 180.

Without an extensive reprogram the 180 would not work. I don't know the capabilities of your programmer but the engine is designed to run with the 195 degree thermo. If yours is going to 230, you have something wrong. Even towing in 100 degree weather I have never seen anything over 210.

According to the factory manual it is normal for the temp to reach above 235 degrees.

My alerts for my EVO is set for 225 dergrees. While the engine is running in park, this alert will come on. I have had the truck in the shop once. But the service rep says that the fans kick in at 227.

Do you happen to know when the fans should kick in?

Something is definetly not right my fan kicks on at 210 not matter if im sitting still or going down the road also my temp gauge has never went over 210 even towing my boat in the dead of summer here in Louisiana.

I agree that 230 regularly, there is something wrong. Mine has only been above 210 once, and that was on a 7% grade towing a 28ft camper. Even then, it never went above about 225.

 

Have you had the gauge checked. The dial unit or the sending unit could be bad. I would lean more toward a bad sender as the EVO is also giving a warning. I have no idea where the EVO gets it temp from.

 

Those fans should come on before 230. Mine come on anytime I am stopped with a warm engine. Remember, the fans are controlled by the radiator temp, not the block temps. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think there is a sensor at the radiator.

 

 

Sorry for the joking answer earlier, I assumed this was another one of those "will I get more power with a cooler thermostat" threads....

 

I would leave the operating temp where it is(or in your case, where it should be-210). You can get into all kind of issues lowering it. Remember, the engine was designd to operate at those temps.

Also when it is colder out side with a lower Stat your Heater inside air will not get as hot! So on Cold day around 32 degrees you will have warm air instead of hot air blowing out of your heater as the motor will never get to it's intended operating temp. As every one has stated take it to the dealer as you are experiencing abnormal operating temperatures weather it is really running that hot or your gauge is inaccurate this is were you need the dealer to check it. Keep us posted on the ouctcome.

Thank you for your input. I guess I need a second opinion from the dealer. I took the truck into the dealer for what I thought was overheating. They replaced the waterpump, idlers belt and thermostat. I still did not see the fans come while sitting in the garage idling. This was on a 95 degree day. I call the dealership and I was told that the fans come on at 227 degrees, unless I turn on the A/C which will force them to kick in sooner.

These temps would bother me as well but I am sure they are not "hurting" anything. It seems all of the trucks with E Fans run a little higher temp than the models with mechanical fans. My '02 Yuk XL runs 194 to 198 in the summer towing a 6500 lb camper. It will move up to 202 to 205 if I leave it at idle with the AC on for 10 mins or more or but as long as I am moving, it never approaches 200.
