Flasher Mod? Good Idea......bad Idea?

So I got to thinking today about what happens when the flasher goes out on my truck and I went and priced one at the local Auto Zone :dunno: and they want 11.99 :sigh: for one so I thought maybe the system could be converted back to the "old" style 2 prong flasher that is like 2.00 or less and you could find at any gas station if needed (I do ALOT of traveling) so if any one wants to help with figuring this out let me know and I am currently trying to figure this one out..........good Idea.......bad Idea???????? the wiring diagram (from autozone) shows 2 seperate flashers but it does go from 1988-1998 go figure

do you have electronic or thermal?

you could cut the old socket, wire/solder a new one in and put whatever you want but then the cost goes up...

for that, I would go to Oriellys/Carquest and get one that has a lifetime warranty on it so if it ever fails in the future, simply have it exchanged.

Is it really worth the trouble? Flashers really don't go out that often now a days. I have had my 1995 for 12 years and never replaced the flasher.

Could you...probably

Is it a good idea...meh. Put the old style in and you will probably replace it more often

Oh and yes there are 2 flashers on my 95. One for the emergency flashers and one for the blinkers.

yeah starting somewhere after 1995 they used one flasher for both my 97 has one flasher....it is a 4 post electric one....using a thermal one would not work so well as far as replacing the old style more often I was thinking of the heavy duty 2 post electronic flashers you can find almost any where.............but Im the kind of guy who sometimes thinks things through TOO much and gets stuck on the one possibility that has a 1 in 100000000000000000 chance of happening thanks for the input yall and Im open for more

The odds of one failing are slim. Yeah, they fail, but what - one in a thousand? MTBF at 10 years? Even at 5 years, the $8 difference will take a loooooonnnngggg time to pay off - even counting labor. Like you said, don't think about it so much. It is one of 10,000 things that could fail.

You mention that you drive a lot...I drive about 65,000 miles a year.

I haven't replaced a flasher in the last 10 or 15 years.

They do fail...but not very often.

I would think that as common as the three post ones are now, that you could find them ANYWHERE that you could find the old two post ones.

Considering the trouble that it is going to entail converting it... IT AIN'T WORTH IT :D

Never replaced a bulb in my truck, replaced a flasher in the wifes car, only because she got rear-ended and her tail light was somewhere inside the trunk (dealer replaced when they repaired). She has over 100K and loves to use the turn signals, iI ask her if she uses it if she decides to drift back and forth in the same lane
