Exterior Door Trim Coming Loose

Recommended Posts

I have an 07 Sierra and I have already had one of the door trim pieces that runs about 10 inches up from the bottom of the door come loose and fall off of my truck. I was washing it the other day, and noticed that there are two more pieces that are coming loose. It seems they are only held on with the double sided tape and the tape keeps coming loose. Has anyone had this problem happen to them? How did you fix it? I am looking at having to take it back to the dealer to see if its covered under warranty.

He's talking about the door moldings. I too had mine on my driver's side come loose. I took it to the dealer and they replaced it for free! Aren't warranties great?

Take it in and get it replaced. Where was your truck built?

I am really not too certain about where it was built. How do I tell that?

I suppose I'll make another appointment to get it looked at and replaced. Thanks.

The molding on my driver's door is starting to loosen up at the front of the door. I've thought about just pulling it off so they'll replace it. It was a product of Canada. There's a sticker on the driver's door jam that says where and when you're truck was built.

The sticker on the door jamb indicates where the vehicle was assembled not where the parts were manufactured. Your engine & front & rear axles are manufactured in Michigan and the transmission in MI or Ohio the rest other than sheet-metal could be manufactured in any state or country.

There is a big difference between assembled & manufactured.

Man, I just noticed this on mine too while I was washing it a second ago. It seems we who drive a lot of miles get screwed on these things that break due to time and not mileage... :)

I would say one possible reason for the moldings coming loose would be improper surface cleaning when they stuck them on at the factory. They should have degreased the surface with rubbing alcohol wipes before applying the moldings. Rubbing alcohol also removes automotive wax from the surface.

If your truck is out of warranty, you can fix the moldings yourself by removing the old 4 M tape and applying new tape and preparing the surface properly as mentioned. A roll of double sided 3M tape is about $ 10 from Auto Zone.

Well, I just decided to take all mine off! Used a erase wheel to take the sticky 3m off the side of the truck, CLEAN AND "SMOOOVE"
