NASCAR with IRL motors?

Jayski site says that Chevy and Ford are suggesting for NASCAR to run the new IRL 3.5L  motor. Normal aspiration and fuel injection instead of what they called "NASCAR'S 50's technology". Less horsepower than the 358ci.. maybe. What do you guys think about this?

Well, Ford's Motor program this year (For BGN atleast) was done by Cosworth, which is Ford's "Indycar engine" specialist.

 

I'd say keep NASCAR and IRL as far opposite from eachother as possible.

I think the time will come when NASCAR puts a common motor in all the cars, like ASA did this year. Maybe have a Ford, GM, and a Dodge motor, all making the same hp and torque. The engine programs at various race teams are very expensive.

This will put more emphasis on setup and driver ability. It will also decrease engine costs dramatically.

ASA teams were building or buying v6 motors at $25,000 a copy and getting one race out of them. The new production Corvette motor that they ran this year cost $10,000 a piece and running for 3-4 races.

From what I saw on the track, the competition and excitement didn't suffer one bit.

Whether it's the IRL motor or not it's about time NASCAR gets with the times and embraces fuel injection at least.  Might even help the cars burn less fuel.  I've been thinking it would be a good idea for the manufacturers to provide the engines to their cars.  Some manufacturer related content (other than general profile) would be restored to the series while making things less expensive for the teams.  The danger is that every week would become one of those restrictor plate nightmares where all 43 cars are running in a big pack.  No passing and one spin would wipe out 15 cars.  Ugh.

 

Call me crazy but if it says "Dodge" on the outside of the car, it should be running a Mopar powertrain.  Likewise for Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, etc.

While it sounds like a good idea, the problem is that teams would spend big $$$$ developing their motors, only to have the politics of Bill France Jr. enter at the last moment, and madate that Ford gets one fuel mapping, Dodge gets another, just like they already do with aero packages. The temptation is too great. And I don' t believe Nascar can be depended on to exercise the necessary self-restraint...they'd be tampering. It becomes a modern restrictor plate that could be used at all the races...not a good thing.

 

They should control superspeedway speed just by mandating a certain number of gallons of fuel for each race that the driver has to make the race distance with. But in Nascar's flawed scoring system, the problem is fundamental. The points chase is all about FINISHING. The possibility of large number of drivers running out of fuel doesn't blend with that strategy, even though it makes for safer racing with fewer cars battling to the wire, and having enough horsepower without a restrictor plate to make some safe passes.

I don't know if this is the way to do it, but one of these days NASCAR is going to have to go with fuel injection.  Every vehicle in production now has had fuel injection for years now, about time NASCAR picks up on that.

    • First off use it in the way you’re more comfortable. In working in off road situations most of my life I used 4WD low range very little. In most cases when equipped I used auto 4WD. If I wanted maximum control going up and down very steep terrain  I used low range. Especially if I was driving a diesel. Same with very rutted terrain. In very muddy or snowy conditions I wanted momentum so high range worked well for that. With gravel ramps with limited traction I would try high range first. I would want smooth even increasing speed if I was fighting traction. Low range could give you too much to the wheels breaking traction trying to move. 
    • Having owned 4wd vehicle since the 1970s I find there are varying opinions on how to use 4wd, every owner is an expert in their minds.  IMO, 4LO is the appropriate gear and what I would use,  You have to feather the gas to avoid spinning tires and the lower the gear the better chance.  But like I said you will find those that think their method is best.  I live near a boat launch.  Yesterday there was a new Ford Maverick pulling out a pontoon boat almost 2x its size, they had no problems and they don't have a LO range.   True story. One winter day not long ago I was coming out of small town post office and there was a F150 4wd parked in front and was stuck foot deep snow ruts. I knew the lady so I asked her to put it in 4wd (wondering why in the middle of a 2-day snow storm she wasn't).  Her reply surprised me, "my husband" (the expert) told me not use that because it uses too much gas. She finally got unstuck spinning in 2wd which likely used more gas than not.  
    • Your tire pressure issue may just be batteries, you can reset them using tge Ing switch (I think) and the owner's  manual. ChatGTP will b e a faster, better help than Google.
    • The thinking is that starting out in a higher gear makes it easier to avoid applying excessive torque when pressing the gas pedal. In a modern 4wd truck with 4 low and a limited slip or locking rear end, I would use 4 low and try to crawl up the ramp. Sometimes if they are too slippery, you have to back up to let the boat have some bouyancy, and then accelerate briskly to get some momentum to help you pull the through the slippery parts. 
    • I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.
