Front Swaybar For '74 C-10 2wd?

Hi-

I also just posted this question in the classic trucks forum as well but thought there might be more responses to be had here: Thanks in advance for your help.

I have to rebuild the front end on my 1974 Chevy C-10 2WD shortbed so that I can get a state vehicle inspection sticker. When the guy at PST asked what the diameter on the swaybar was, I went "DUH" since after all these years, I had no idea.

Cut to the chase: I went out and crawled under the truck and there is no sway bar and no evidence that there ever was one there. In my Chilton's, one of its "typical" illustrations shows that they were installed. I even looked under my '69 Impala to see about where Chevy attached the bushings to the frame and checked my truck again but could find nothing.

Does anybody know if these trucks had one? Would it be recommended to try to install one for better handling or better to leave well enough alone? Just for grins, it is an original 350 with a 2 barrel rochester and manual saginaw trans with 3.73 rears.

Thanks for reading my post,

Vinny

I bought a new 1974 1/2 ton with the 454.

I am "ALMOST" positive that it had a sway bar in the front.

That was a long time ago.:fume:

Yep. '74 had one

Yes install one.

+1, Vinny you can usually pick one up from some of the aftermarket suspension suppliers. It's been years since I've installed one but it is a pretty easy job to do. Sometimes the frame and lower A arms are already drilled for one. For some reason back in the day they didn't put a sway bar on everything? :smoker:

Thanks everybody for your comments. My frame rails are missing the brackets that are depicted in the illustration that the sway bar bushings bolt to. Based on the feedback, my guess is that those brackets might have been specific to C-20s and up. Also it would seem that these brackets came welded to the frame rails...

Thanks again,

Vinny

No welding, all bolt-on.Here's a pic of the bushings I bought thru the 'net.I saw similar @ Autozone. These were meant for my '77 but my son wrecked the truck before I could use 'em.

you might look for bolt holes that are filled with dirt and grease, they may be there just covered.
