My front passenger wheel bearings are starting to make a lot of racket on my 2006 crew cab. I only have about 40,000 miles, but I hear these are not very good units. Regardless, I probably have a couple of weeks at the most on this one before I need a replacement. My question is where should I buy my replacement for the best price/quality/longevity. Obviously the factory unit did not hold up to stock wheels and tires and on road driving.:thumbs: Thanks.

Unfortunately Timken has moved manufacturing of many of their products to China. :thumbs: This pisses me off to no end. Has this country completely lost any national pride or just sold it for bigger profits?

Yeah it's almost impossible to find things made in the USA anymore. It really pisses me off too. I buy American every chance I get!

I'm a fan of eBay but make sure you get the Timken hubs. They'll last longer than the other stuff you'll find there for $80.

 

 

Autozone has a new timken unit for about 150 dollars. I think that is a reasonable price (much better than the 506 dollars ac delco wants for an OE product). Is it the bearing quality that I want to look for? I suppose that is where the failure occurs?

What is the symptom of your bad bearing? I have a woop-woop-woop-woop-woop coming from my left front wheel when it's cold outside and the truck is cold. It makes the noise relative to the speed of the wheel. However, it goes away when I hit the brake. Do bearing sounds go away when you hit the brake?

My truck does the exact same thing. Replaced right front wheel hub bearing assembly as identified by GM tech and it still does it. He also replaced pinion seal and output shaft seals. Its made that sound for longer than i can remember now I think. Does it regardless of terrain and frequency is speed dependent. Thought it would be my BFG AT's but I wanna say it did it with my stock tires and my studded snow tires. If you figure this out lemme know.

That's odd. The way I know a bearing is going bad is that it sounds like a low pitched hum as you go down the street, at least that's how it is on all the S-series 4wds.

 

Do you brakes pulsate? Maybe warped rotors or something? The one thing to think about is the tires. I know you said it disappears under braking, but thta is when you have a lot of weight transfer to the front of the truck and that could change the noise. I would rotate the tires and inspect for uneven wear. In the past I have had a bad shock make that noise and under braking you could never tell.

 

Anyway, I think if you can do a bearing from Autozone for $150 that may be a good deal. the AZ around me wants $193 for one. They have them on eBay for as little as $7x.00 but i would be suspect of the quality unless you are getting rid of the truck. I would be tempted to use a boneyard takeoff being sold before one of the cheap versions.

I first heard my 99 2500 start with a very low, barely audible, whirring. It was only at or above certain speeds like 50 mph or some such speed. It would change/go away as it was side loaded in a slight turn. I let it go until it got much much louder. That took almost a year or 15,000 to 20,000 miles. Then it started making a grinding sound in my work's parking structure as I went around and up and down. That's when I finally jacked it up and grabbed the wheel and could move it quite a bit. I already knew it was the hub, but just wanted to get an idea of how bad it was. There was metal dust around the hub. This occurred at around 135,000 miles. I changed both hubs just because.

Carquest. In my experiance their parts (in many cases) are better than OEM.

I got mine replaced at the dealer through my extended warranty just the other day. They ended up doing some other work I asked for as well, including replacing a worn out tie rod end and a power steering flush. Mine did not seem to make much noise until it was really bad. I did not notice anything until it began to squeak really badly, then I started looking into it and found metal shavings and when I jacked it up, there was a lot of play. It went from the first time I heard it to very bad for me within about 5 days.

Just last week, my 2000 K2500 had a bad hub bearing. The only warning I got was........NONE! Traveling at 45mph the bearing failed, in pieces. The wheel leaned out really bad, the brakes were somkin', pulled the cv shaft apart too. Bought the Timkin hub for the low,low price of 285$ and new shaft as well. Funny thing is........I have exactly 135,000miles on my truck. Are these bearings set to fail at 135k? Almost everybody who has failures occur at135k. lol
