What's The Difference Between Gmc Contoured And Molded Mudflaps?

Anyone know the difference between the GMC contoured and molded mudflaps? Does one work better (i.e fit better) than the other? I can't tell if they look about the same or not from the stock photos I see on GM Accessories Zone. Which one should I get?

Think of the contoured as more of a flexible mud flap. Whereas the molded a hard plastic mud shield. Both seem to cover the same amount of area. As for looks, its the molded all the way. Mine went on great and seem to really protect the side of the truck. Plus the have the red GMC logo to match my truck.

I like mine,.. other than they say GM instead of GMC... they are nice looking and do the job. Simple and clean. I'm sure you can find ones that have the correct logo on from GM too.

Were either of you guys able to find mud flaps with pre-drilled holes? The ones I got had some crazy-a*s directions about putting the screws in the fenders, smacking the mudflap with a hammer, and drilling the holes in the dents where the screws were.

 

Anyway they took a little while to get straight but they look like they should work pretty good. Highly recommended (at least on the front) for anyone who drives off-road as I found a bunch of mud and leaves up in my cab corners. There is a little seam there behind the inner fender liner that didn't get protected very well by the fender liner itself, but I think the mud flaps will keep stuff out of there.

 

Of course, the rear mud flaps are probably a good idea for the guy behind ya ;)

Another thing to remember is that if you do go offroading, watch out that you don't get them hung up on logs or rocks. I had one of my front ones get hung up on a log and it ripped a little. just something to watch out for because they do not bend all that well.

Contoured flaps mount to the inside of the fender-well, whereas the molded flaps wrap over/around the outside of the fender and onto the side-panel.

I had the molded on my last 2000 chevy pickup and they caused rust around the front mudflaps due to paint rub. Any ideas on how to keep this from happening on my new truck if I decide to get a set?

I have the GM molded ones. They protect the sheet metal from dings, keep the mud slinging on

the side of the truck to a minimum.

that s an issue with the molded ones. Some guys were putting a clear plastic film (paint saver) along where the meet the body. I got the other ones this time. They are a little thinner and I ll see how they hold up.

I put the factory molded GMC flaps on my truck. I remember hearing about the clear tape AFTER I installed the flaps on my truck. Sounds like a good idea, if you do get the factory molded SPLASH GAURDS as they are called, DO NOT tighten the back bolt to the directions specs to 60lbs torque like it reads. I ran the bolt head right threw the plastic doing it like it was written using a torque wrench; just tighten till you see the plastic compress. I had to return them to the dealer for a new set. When I asked the counter man about the directions he just shrugged. Good luck, Jake.
