Bruised Ego

After yesterday got off to a great start, I got bored yesterday afternoon/evening so I decided to go for a drive. After a while I ended up out in the boonies where the nice, decently smooth dirt road turned into deep sand instantly. Without the chance to even bog down, it just stopped. Tried rocking it out, but just dug it in deeper. There was some carpet on the side of the road (apparently this has happened before) so I drug it over and tried jamming it under the tires...to no avail. Embarrassed, I called one my friends to come pull me out (she has a 4x4 Tacoma V6) which had no trouble pulling me out. Well after getting back to town, I pulled up to a red light next to her and revved my engine...so a small street race ensued (don't worry, we didn't break 45mph). Off the line, that Taco left me in the dust despite being down 79hp and 72ft-lbs. I need to try and get another run with her out in the middle of nowhere where we can go a little faster, but feel that that might hurt my ego even more. After hearing about it my other friends were like "I thought you said that had a V8?"

But seriously, only down 79hp but alot less weight, as for pulling you out, was she in the sand to or on terra firma?

Right now there is "previously proud" 2010 Mustang GT owner that has a bruised ego because he could not pull away from a nearly 6000 lb Crewcab with 33" tires from a 70 MPH roll.

She was behind me up on the fairly solid dirt road. When pulling me out. I'm sure being pulled out by a girl makes the story even worse, but in honesty, the only two friends I have with trucks are girls...all the guys have cars ranging from an 88 Volvo to a 01 Civic.

After the light turned green, the Tacoma spun the tires quite a bit, and took off while my truck felt like it had it's head up it's ass (dammit GM what's the point of building engines with power and torque if you won't let us use it?) A black bear tune is in my future in about 3-4 months in Wichita.

I have driven both and am almost certain my truck would easily take that Taco from 35-40 to 70(going down an on-ramp). That seems to be the run this truck really likes.

Thats why she pulled you out so easy, as for the beaten by a girl part all I can say is

Tacos are fast, they make a V8 one I drove here at Toyota school and it flew. I haven't driven the V8 Canyon yet so I can't say the Taco is faster than it. The Tundra is a dog though.

The TRD V6 with the six speed is pretty fast too. The Taco is the only Product Toyota buids that is worth a damn.

Until the frame rusts out.

    • Using experience to justify bad advice is lazy and typical of someone incapable of articulating why their advice is prudent.    This immediately sets off the BS alert and the advice that followed certainly qualified.   Asking an idiot for help getting out of dumb situations because he is an expert... at getting himself into dumb situations.   Unless I've been living in an alternate universe - the first thing everyone does when getting into a sticky situation is shift to a higher gear 🤨.   Of course not, the torque multiplication, mechanical advantage and finer control typically afforded by the lower gear is far better suited for this scenario.   There ARE scenarios where a higher gear MIGHT be appropriate determined more by the drivers ability to control EXCESSIVE wheel spin versus applying torque to the ground.
    • I'm not sure I agree with "extreme" low speed, high torque sentiment here with regards to the prescribed use of low range. How about...whenever it's needed?   A 2.72:1 transfer case and whatever differential gears these Silverados have (3.42's, maybe?) aren't producing "extremely" low crawl speeds. Or insanely high torque multiplication. Even with the 1st gear in these newer transmissions. But it does provide mechanical advantage and potentially better control at slower speeds. And with extra weight or towing, I think it adds mechanical sympathy for the truck as well.   Plus, traction control and the other assists generally turn off when you shift into low range. Those aren't needed here, they'll work against you if you need wheel spin. In high range you'll need to figure out how to turn off the various modes those assists provide. Depending on the vehicle, those things don't all automatically turn off or turn completely off.   While I agree that a farmer might have some great practical experience, a recommendation to "always" using one gear isn't very informed advice. If the farmer had said WHY and could explain the physics behind his prescriptive "always" I'd definitely listen. The way he's described here makes it sounds like he could either be uninformed or is telling everyone what worked for him, not necessarily that there could be a more advantageous way about things.
