Towing With My Tune

Recommended Posts

Just want to know your opinions on towing an empty U-haul trailer (1800 lbs.) about 300 miles with my tune from Jesse @ Wait4me.

I currently have it on my Max Tune. I figure it weighs so little that the tranny should barely know it's there. Let me know what you think.

thanks, Ben

I had a Jesse tune in my 01 Tahoe and I towed an enclosed 6 space dirtbike trailer all over the country for about 20K miles (of towing) and never had an issue.

Shouldn't a tune make it tow better?

Not necessarily. Putting the extra strain on the motor could cause early detonation. Make sure you run premium fuel, if you hear pinging, then back off on the throttle. I towed for years with a custom tune without issue, but found out early on, I needed to run 93 when towing. I could get away with 87 under normal driving, but need the 93 while towing.

With the amount of weight your planning on towing, you'll probably have no issues at all.

Yes and no. Power wise yes assuming you are not getting any detonation. Where a lot of potential problems can appear is with the transmission. Yes, most tuners will increase line pressure and that will help, but the removing too much torque management in combination with towing is where I see problems. I am not a torque management fan, I prefer to let my right foot do most of that for me, but it does have its place. Towing is one of them.

I tow quite a few times per year so, I Justin did not remove any TM in my T/H mode. In regular Drive, I had him remove 100% of the TM. I still have all of my power improvements while in T/H, but in an attempt to save my clutches we left the TM alone.

According to Jesse, you can tow whatever you want with his tunes. Well, anything the truck can handle. Also, the standard W4M tunes does leave in TM.

I am sure that much of my TM was removed with the "max tune". I will tune it down to the "performance tune" just to be safe.

Pssshhh...you'll be fine, he hardly removes/d any TM, so shifting shouldn't be of worry. I'm half-joking, but from what I understand, a lot of people have found that he removes far less TM than requested. As for fuel, I'd run whatever octane you have it tuned for.

It is my understanding that unless you specifically asked ("insisted" may be a better word), Jesse "The Hack" does not remove any TM.

It certainly doesn't feel like he left much on there. I know line pressure can make it feel like there is none, but at WOT it shifts hard (love it) and only loses about 2000 rpms between shifts. Maybe it's just my seat of the pants gauge telling me lies.
