2001 3500... 8.1l Issues

I have several problems with my 8.1L

1. It is difficult to start (I usually have to key on and wait 10-15 seconds, crank, key off and crank again)

2. The truck randomly stalls when going down the road. All lights go off... the clock resets engine goes off and it will not restart

immediately.

3. The fuel gage does not move smoothly... it is choppy when coming up to the fuel level.

I have purchased a Crank Position Sensor and am going to install that. Before I did i was wondering if there was any other advice on what could be causing these issues. Thanks.

Faulty sending unit in the fuel tank. Very common problem. Might as well replace the fuel pump too while you're in there.

bad ground maybe?

+1 check battery cables and connectors. Make sure they are nice and tight. Also inspect all the engine strap grounds.

Birds of a feather flock together! Maybe a marginal fuel pump is causing some of the trouble?

I would replace the fuel pump stuff, the fuel filter, and the crank position sensor. Then see what the symptoms are.

Might want to check all main electrical cables while the engine is running. This would include main ground wires. Note there is a main ground wire connected to the engine somewhere as well as to the body. (Big wires) Try "wiggling" them with the engine running and see if it causes the problem of the electrical loss (and engine stopping) to happen.

Welcome to the forum, I can't help much on your prob. I had a 2001 2500 8.1l and fortunately had no probs at all out of it, put close to 80,000 on it and traded when gas hit 3.50 gallon. Still miss that thing, I hope you get it fixed.
