Anyone Ever Heard Of This Fix?

My brother was having a problem with his 1500, I'm not sure what year it is. The problem he was having was that it would start but not keep running. He was thinking fuel pump or fuel filter. He was about to take it to a dealer to be checked out when someone told him to turn the key to the on position and leave it there until the dash lights went out then start the truck. He did this and says the truck is running fine now.

You know the saying about looking a gift horse in the mouth but is this a real fix?

Just throwing it out there, but maybe it has something to do with the security system? Maybe something isn't reading the key properly. I've heard it will either not start or start and die right away if the security system doesn't like the signal it gets from the key. Maybe I'm way off, but just a thought, maybe try another key to see if the key may be the culprit.

I'd be suspicions of such a "fix". Somebody would have a lot of explaining to do before I trusted that it would not happen again.

there might be something to that security thing, our dodge magnum did that it would start fine then run for about 3 seconds then die. did that over and over until we tried a different key.

Could it be that it took time for the fuel pump to build up enough pressure to feed the engine? Just a thought...

When I put the new engine control module on mine, I had to do a security relearn.

The procedure is kinda like you described.

Turn the key "ON"...wait for the dash lights to go out...then try to start it.

Since he didn't replace the ECM...he may want to consider getting a new key.

That one may be on it's last legs. :)

Just a thought...

That was my first thought as well. Which might be indicative of an injector or pump issue.

My second thought..... was that he actually has a 2500 Dmax and doesn't realize it, and isn't waiting for the glow plugs to prep :)
