How Accurate Is The Tpms System

Recommended Posts

I have an 08 with the TPMS system. How accurate is it? My gauge shows about 37 psi, but the DIC/TPMS shows around 45 psi. Is the system usually pretty dead on accurate or is it sometimes off a little bit? The batteries on my gauge died this weekend so that might have something to do with it not getting an accurate reading. Also, any gauges that you would recommend?

Everytime I have checked mine against my gauge it was within one pound. So I would say most of the time it is dead on.

Mine shows acouple of PSI lower on the DIC then with a guage at the wheel, 36 at the wheels and 34 on the DIC. One of the guys I work with has told me he puts 38psi in each tire and the DIC shows 34.

mine is within 1 psi every time on my 08 Tahoe.

I'm glad this topic came up. When I had the original tires on mine they seemed to work pretty good. After replacing them with Firestone Destination A/T and running more air pressure than before they are never the same like they were before. I put 35 lbs in each tire the other day and I mean exactly 35 lbs (according to my gauge anyway). After several minutes of driving down the road they read 33,34,35,36. Even when they warm up they are still off. Think I need to go by the stealership and get them recalibrated or something.

TPMS sensors are good within ±2 psi. I'm sure a digital gauge with dead batteries would give a poor reading. Also, I would suspect sensors to get erroneous readings after aging.

Mine are within 1 psi as well

Might want to try recalibrating them via the method in the manual.... Maybe that does position and helps zero out the pressure too since it senses pressure drop

When tires get warm, air pressures go up. Park with one set of tires in the hot sun and the other in shade and watch. That's why you test them when they are cold. Pressure gauges are all different. I worked in a tire shop, we took one tire, filled it to and INDICATED 35 psi and all the guys took their guages and checked it, not one reading the same. Six guys with a ranges from 32-42 psi. Don't panic about 5 psi difference. TPMS must also be moving to get an accurate reading. If you've parked for more than a couple of hours, drive 5 minutes before you look at it.

I have the OTC TPMS tool and the reading from the sensor with that are about 1-2 psi different than what the DIC says.

Driving for any length of time will give inaccurate cold pressure readings.

Get a new gauge - mine is dead on and I have checked it against more than one gauge.

Of the many tire pressure gauges I've had, few matched each other. Some were 5 psi or more difference. Never had one 10 psi different. Checking it against another gauge is comforting that you have a gauge that may be "reasonable". ... or you just found another gauge that has the same error as yours. I'd beleive my TPMS as much as I'd believe a gauge on close calls.

The resolution of the gauge is important too... some of the gauges out there are so hard to read due to their resolution that you can have a 4psi swing depending on 'who' is reading it
