Normal Trans Temps (unloaded)

Looking to see what normal trans temps are for 2500hd CC 4wd w/ 6.0. Outside temps around 90 degrees, driving w/ stop and go city traffic? Also Hwy continous driving? This is without towing anything.

I am having heating issues, I think something is plugging up the trans cooling system. Just waant to have numbers to check with when dealership says it is ready.

Thanks

My truck runs between 155* and 180* around town without a trailer. With a trailer, I run between 185*, and 210* or so. GM says that the normal operating range unloaded is 180*-200*, and loaded up to 260* is acceptable.

What temp are you getting up to?

Stop and go in 90 degrees unloaded? 200F wouldn't shock me but it should come down when you get it moving and the TC locked up. The fluid will eventually rise close to the engine coolant temperature.

My trans temp reads from 155-175 unloaded( after warmed up and in moving traffic it stays in the 160, with outside temps in the 80-90s), in my stop and go traffic from work. It is a 25 mile trip, with some small hills, and from work the first 5 miles has heavier traffic, then flows to mild traffic. I also read my trans temp from my scanguage so it reads out the temps more clearly than the factory guage.

Thanks for the replys. I just purchased the truck used. Under warrenty a new trans was put in. Driving home it reached 250, so I took it back. I believe either something is not allowing the trans to cool by blocking the fluid movent, or something else is heating up the trans. The dealer is supposed to pull the radiator and have it flushed and tested. I ordered a B&M cooler to replace the stock ext cooler. I will also have some of the rubber lines replaced. There has been alot of trans problems with this truck and I bet alot of gunk is in the lines. Although, when the new trans was put in, they said that they had checked the flow rates and flushed the system. So dont know, I just want to make sure I know what temps to look for when I pick the truck up.

Thanks

What would you recommend as the best transmission service method? The flush that quick maintenance places perform does not replace the filter screen. Thoughts?

NO always drop the pan and change the filter. Flushing in my opinion is not good. IF you have a desire to flush the transmission. Change the fluid and filter then 500 miles later due it again that will flush it for sure. Anything short of changing the filter is a waste,

Yeah, 250 is out of line. Maybe if you were towing up a long grade wailing on it but not in stop and go traffic.

Anytime I've looked at mine, it's between 145 and 165 depending on conditions.

Mines not a 2500, but does have the 6.0

Thanks,

Forget the dealership. Talked to them today, they flushed the trans and blew alot of stuff out the ext cooler. most likly back into the trans. I am taking the truck to a friend, should have taken it to him first, after the new trans was installed and still running hot. I fiqured, that the dealership would have been more compentant. I plan to have friend pull the radiator and have it flushed at a radiator shop, replace some of the cooler lines, then pull the pan and filter for another change.

Thanks for the replys

Mine never runs hotter that about 150 unloaded....with the pontoon boat in tow on a hot day it will hit 175 or so, and about 180-190 pulling the 5th wheel....

On a drive today, I checked the transmission temperature, 150F. It was raining out so I'm sure that helped keep the temp down.

You can always install a deep trans pan. The extra fluid really helps alot. I have a friend that did that on his 4L80e trans. It worked well for him.

Brought the truck from dealership to my friends shop which is around the corner. The dealership ran it on a parts run and said the temp did not get over 200. Not sure what is was at cruising speed. My friend is going to pull the radiator and take it to a radiator shop to be tested and cleaned. Then he is going to drop the pan and clean out any sediment and install new fluid. I also have a B&M trans cooler that I will swap withe the oem one. I will report next week what temps I see.

Thanks again
