Engine Life

Hey Everyone,

So i was just wondering what the typical milage a 2000 silverado 4.8 litre V8 short box could achieve before the engine needs to be replaced. Right now i have 73000 miles or 116900 km and i wanted to know how many more i should be able to get on the engine. It is running synthetic and i change the oil every 5000 km and the trucks been "babied" since day one and is in mint condition.

You only have 73,000 miles? Your engine is just getting broken in! I've seen several of these LS-based V8s get 300,000 miles or more without a major rebuild... and with proper care you should be able to get that EASILY. I plan on keeping my 5.3L truck until either the drivetrain goes or the body falls off around it; I'll probably still have it 30 years from now at that rate

You shouldnt worry about the engine (proper maint.) you will be set. Tranny may need to be refreshed around 150k though.

If its babied like you say you will be fine for a long time. Just keep up on the oil changes and do a tune up every 100,000 miles.

Well let me put it this way. We run a family construction business and only run GM trucks. We have 5 over 300,000km, 3 over 400,000km, and 2 over 500,000km and we have never rebuilt a motor yet. We've put in a few trannys and some minor parts but never rebuilt the motor. And our trucks are work trucks that pull skidders, and tools, etc around everyday so they don't get babied! Your motor should last you for a very long time!

My oldest service truck 2000 5.3 4x4 has 250K + miles and uses Mobil 1 and changed when the OLM light comes on, so far no internal repairs and still not using more than 1qt to 3000mi.

My 99 2500 6.0L has about 215,000 miles on it. Mobil 1 since it got its first oil change. Finally gave up last summer and changed the waterpump and thermostat when I flushed it. Wanted to change the waterpump on my terms. It wasn't giving any indications of problems. Cleaned the throttle body and MAF last week. Gotta change the 02 sensor. No major problems since new.

Gentlemen,

My experience in fleet situations in Phoenix, Arizona, different drivers and heavy duty abusive towing in the city says these engines are nearly bulletproof with 300,000 miles to be reasonably expected. And this with dino oils changed every 6000 miles.

When an engine did need major work, it was caused by hose failure/overheat by dumb ass drivers that did not stop. When opened up, engines were clean with little or no visible wear. Rings would be stuck because of the overheat. Not the fault of the engine.

You betcha, I like Chevy.
