Dealership Coolant Change

Gents,

 

Please help me sort this out, as I am convinced the dealer did poor service.

 

1. Took the truck in yesterday for Coolant Flush (price was $120 for chemical flush and refill)

2. Drove 25 miles home, then another 15 miles to help a buddy.

3. Checked coolant for antifreeze protection using a Prestone tester

4. Prestone Tester says protection is not there (didn't register)

5. Placed tester into known 50/50 dexcool/water mix - Coolant protection ~ -34F

6. Drove truck Sunday a.m. with heater on full blast (5 miles at 192F) let sit another 10 minutes with heat on

7. Re-checked protection, still not registering

8. Placed sample into clean plastic container, and placed container in refrigerator freezer

9. After 30 minutes, sample is SLUSH, freezer temp is 1F according to infared thermometer

10. Notable color difference in sample in reservoir (orange-light orange0 vs. sample in known mixture (reddish)

 

All samples taken from Coolant Reservoir

Squeezed all hoses to check for air

Prestone test - type with red level indicator, black hose, black squeeze bladder, clear plastic reservoir

When the liquid would fill, the indicator would rise to mid way (maybe -22F) then drop immediately

sample size is 2x test indicator volume

 

I'm very discouraged by this as I have had the trucks maintenance (trans and trans case) + warranty work complete there

 

Am I missing anything. What should I request to address this.

You have wasted enough of your time. Wait until the shop is open and bring it back, explain "very nicely" what you have found & how disappointed you are and unsure of there workman ship. Then you say, will you explain these things to me and have someone different recheck the work that has been done.

If you go in there pissed nothing good will happen out of it, people do make mistakes, maybe the coolant was a new tank and the guy that installed it put the wrong stuff in?. If they F'd up and are a good place, they will take care of it and through in some free services.

Not jacking your thread here. Is the tester for testing Ethelyn the same one used for Propylene? I am getting the same thing done soon, and will test it after we get home.

Not sure on the tester. I bought one that said it was for Dexcool. My other car is a cobalt so not sure if the test would work for other anti-freeze or not.

I think the fact that it froze at 1F is all that is needed.

The prestone tester at walmat says it's good for dexcool and the Ethelyn glycol antifreeze. I just bought one and tested it in prestone dexcool 50/50 mix.

Don't be put off by the orange color, I just changed the dexcool in my truck with GM brand stuff and it's orange in the reservoir. However, unlike your situation I checked mine out and it floated all the little balls. That shop should be kissing your ass, you might have saved them from some costly $$ down the road in having to cover people's cracked engine blocks.
