Spark Plug Indexing

Hello I was talking with Ford and Dodge friends and came up with the subject of spark plug indexing, any 2007 and up Silverado owners try this and what results? I have a set of washers and am considering trying it. I have a 2008 5.3 truck.

Thank you for your time and response.

I have done it on my Pro-Street Monte and I am sure I picked up a H/P or 2 but I doubt the results would be noticable on a stock motor?

Might be worth a try, especially if your buddies said it made a difference and you believe they are not B.S.ing you?

Could somebody just clue me in right quick on what indexing is? I'm guessing it's putting a space in between the spark plug and the block. What does this do? Never even heard of it.

Seeing a gain on a stock engine would be like picking fly-shit out of pepper.

Spark plug indexing is a process that "aims" the electrode of the spark plug at the optimum position in the combustion chamber. When you tighten a spark plug, the electrode doesn't necessarily point in the optimum direction, so washers are used to "shim" the plug so that when it's fully tightened, it's oriented correctly.

No problem. In fact, if you go to powerblocktv.com and watch the episode "budget 454 build," they explain the procedure.

They also show in that episode that the GM 454 out performs the Ford 450 and is evencheaper to build then the Ford.

Best way to index is get about 3 sets of plugs and use a marker to mark on the ceramic area of the plug where the electrode is and thread each plug till you find one where the line points up at you. When the line is facing you....you know the electrode is pointing up at the valves. Might be able to get away with 2 sets of plugs but it usually takes me 3 to get all 8 cylinders in the right position.

LMAO........I agree though.....unless you're really anal / ocd....then go for it......don't think you would notice any

difference but you might "feel" good inside for doing it....lol....

Back in my drag racing days Autolite plugs would be the best used when you wanted to index a set of plugs. AC Delco would be the next choice. Running high octane gas in our old 482 ci motor the Autolites would run .01 to .02 quicker than anything else. I rarely had to go much past 10 plugs to get 8 for a set.
