How-To: Change The Color Of Your 99-02 GMT800 HVAC Control Backlights.

Ok, most of you have already seen mods on how to change the instrument cluster lights to LED's. Now heres how to do basically the same thing to your AC control panel.

First off, remove the AC control panel from the truck. Now carefully pop odd the 3 control knobs. Now open up the switch by removing the 4 1/4 inch hex screws on the back.

Now carefully release the tabs holding the circuit board in the white part of the contol panel, work your way around untill it comes loose.

You can also unscrew the bottom board from the front panel by unscrewing the two 1/4inch hex scews.

The 4 stock bulbs on the bigger circuit board are wired in two pairs. Each pair is wired in series. So you will need to unsolder all 4 bulbs and on the two that I have circled, put a 330ohm resistor on the positive lead.

Here is how you want to orient the resistor into place. So it will line up the the two pinholes in the circuit board just like the stock bulb.

After you solder in your LED's with resistors, follow the tracer on the circuit board to the bulb next to it. That pin is where you will solder in your positive lead for the next LED, ground in the other pinhole. Here is a shot with the two right ones done.

Now all four done.

Now you can move on to the smaller lower panel which lights up the buttons.

I've seen other sites say to do these with 3mm LED's (as the stock bulbs are about 3mm) but I put 5mm LED's and they fit just fine.

For the lower panel, you will need to solder in a 330 ohm resistor inline in the second wire from the right. This wire feeds the positive to all four of these bulbs.

Now simply unsolder the stock bulbs, and solder the LED's in their place. The thin tracer wire on each bulb is the positive lead. On these, I had to do a little trial and error getting the LED's tilted on a slight angle to fire at the button for the best possible light output to each switch. Heres the LED's in place.

Now all are done.

Now you can put the switch back together and go check it out in your truck. Here is a pic testing it on my power supply.

What resistors did you use the 1/4 , 1/8, or the 1/2 watt 330 ohm resistors

 

I used the 1/4 watt, but 1/2 watt will also work.

I now have destroyed 2 temp control boards. Do you know who I can get to do my led change out on all my switches. I've done the cluster.

I do actually offer this service as well. There have been quite a few members on several different truck forums that have sent me their switches and panels to have me install blue LEDs in them because they either didn't have good soldering skills or else they were just too hesitant to tackle the project themselves.

I charge $50 to do an AC control panel. Most other switches are in the $20 to $35 range depending on which switch it is. Parts and labor is included, but shipping is extra. Just send me a PM and we can discuss.

    • The curb weight on a 1 ton crew cab long bed is around 7k lbs.  Now, I don't know where you went to school but 9k is not more than 2x 7k lbs. More than 2x 7k lbs would be 14k+.   With that said, obviously yes you're going to feel a 9k lb trailer when slowing down.  I already said, when accelerating.  When changing lanes?  No.  But if you look at the context of what was quoted, the original person said, "after a mile or two..." which means that would be after the accelerating portion and you're driving a generally steady pace.  Please do learn to read and comprehend.
    • So I purchased the Range unit for my 2026 and I am seeing different locations suggested for the ECM . Can anyone confirm wither under hood, left side or right side or behind the wheelwell?
    • Like I've said before. Di and Carbon buildup is not that big of a concern. Engine had minimal buildup, and that engine was obviously not super well maintained. Do regular oil changes, and you're gtg as long as the rest of the truck lasts. Also, the High Pressure FP that people ****** about, but can't tell you why.  Now, I wish they'd trash the variable oil pump. No real world issues with them, but I'll gladly eat whatever miniscule MPG it's saving me in favor of more oil at all RPMs.    Curious to see his assessment of the 7.3 compared to the 6.6. I expect he'll praise the port inj, but from a structural standpoint, the 6.6 is as robust as any engine out there.    Not to take away from the 7.3. I feel it's equally as good as the 6.6.     As to heat on the rear cyls, I'd have to see numerous examples before I'd say it's an issue. Especially not knowing the history of that engine. For all is known, they could have blown a rad hose, and ran it hot, and the 2 rear cyls may be the first to get hot in a low coolant situation, but not be an issue aside from that. 
    • "Life is getting back to normal."    I'm driving again and all new joints are operating as expected for this stage of recovery.   My most recent joint replacement still requires a lot of attention but experience has taught me that time will quiet the remaining pain.  I joked with my surgeon that another joint replacement would take my mind off my most recent surgery and he responded by saying the next will be a hip!  There are no plans for another surgery but, unlike me, I don't think he was joking!  I certainly wouldn't refuse further replacement  if required but hope to spend time out of the "post-op"  period.  I can't stress enough that if you have been recommended for total hip, knee or shoulder replacement that you welcome the offer.  Post-op "recovery" may sound daunting and painful, however, this is far better than the insidious erosion of mobility you are currently experiencing.  Imagine what it would feel like to wake up most mornings feeling better and more mobile than you did the previous day!  Prior to my first surgery in June 2025, even getting out of bed was becoming a formidable task.  Since the day after my first surgery, I get out of bed everyday easily and unassisted.  Making the switch to feeling a little better each day rather than a little worse, is hugely motivating!
