Problems At Certain Mileage

Since I'm going to have to save my pennies to afford a new truck, I was just wondering if there were any patterns of faults, particularly in the 1999-2007 1/2-tons. Is there an approximate mileage that they just go to pot or can they run until the wheels fall off? Granted this is all based upon proper maintenance and upkeep.

I was wondering how many miles you guys have put on your trucks and what problems you've encountered at approximate mileage.

For me the at about 105,000 I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets, but other than that, I've turned 137,000 without any other problems.

The radio in my 99 2500 is crap. It started crackling shortly after buying the truck, only when in the AM band, which I listen to news very often on. It still does it intermittantly. The CD player died, haven't replaced it. Front spindles (wheel bearings) went at about 135,000 miles.

I have an '04 1500 with the 4.8. I've replaced both front hubs, the dash instrument cluster and the A/C compressor.......thankfully all under an extended GM warranty.

My dads 99 Silverado:

Around 125,000 - 135,000 miles - Bad Steering Shaft

Around 135,000 - 145,000miles - ABS Motor went bad, bad waterpump, bad power steering pump, bad window regulator.

Around 150,000 - 161,000miles - EGR Valve went bad, starting to rust out, door locks won't work right, fuel pump going bad.

Every light in the dash is on in his truck, but It still starts and drives, and gets good gas mileage.

Can't stand this truck; every 450 or 500 miles I have to fill it up. Happens all the time. Cheap Chebbies.....

My 04,

Front drivers wheel bearing @ 141,000 kms/88 125 miles.

Front Passenger wheel bearing @ 152,000 kms/95000 miles, used OEM ones both times.

Steering shaft needs to be replaced, whenever I have the spare $$. Next rear brake job will require backing plates.

Other than that, I love my 04.

I also love the 'Drive By Wire", totally awesome. Also love the rear disc brakes.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Z71 ECLB

O2 Sensor wrapped around front drive shaft @ 10kish miles.

Right brake caliper bolt fell out locked up right wheel at 35MPH @ 20kish

CV's Torn @ 20kish.

Brakes (rotors, drums, shoes, and pads) @ 20k miles.

Front hubs, half shafts, differential @ about 40kish.

AC compressor @ 45kish.

G80 Not locking @ hell I dunno when it went bad.

Washer Pump housing cracked @ 50k.

New Shocks @ 50k.

Just some of the hard times my baby and I have went through. Some good some bad. Some of these were also caused by me. Consider this list an exception to the rule, I still love my truck. Besides the shocks, brakes, and washer pump all of which was covered by warranty.

2006, WT, 4x4, 4.8L. the front hubs and brakes were replaced around 80k, before I drove this one, the previous driver had issues with the climate control fan motor. It's had the steering shaft problem since it was under warranty but the previous driver didn't bother to mention it, now it's too late for a freebie. It needs new shocks now.

I bought a 99 Silverado extended cab Z71 in August of 99 and I had the original battery go bad in 2001. But during that time GM had a big batch of AC Delco batteries that were basically crap. My battery got replaced under warranty including a free tow. This truck was one of the years that got freebie tailgate cables replaced under a recall. In 2006, I had to replace the 4WD switch which was about $50 and 5 minutes work.

The 5.3L motor turned out to be one of the "piston slap" motors and other than the morning clatter, it never failed to start and pulled my car and trailer wil no problems even though the 275HP was a bit lacking.

The OEM tires were Firestone Wilderness AT's and were IMHO garbage. They lasted about 43K when I replaced them with Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's. They were a 1000 times better. I also dumped the original shocks after 50K miles and installed KYB Mono-Max shocks and Air Lift air bags for towing.

When I traded the 99 on my 08 last year it had about 77K on the odometer and it stil had the OEM brake pads that had a good 40% left on them. Other than all of that, it was a great truck and there were no other problems.

I've had me new truck for 14 months now and the only problem has been a bad seal in the tranny front pump. That got fixed under warranty.

My 99 GMC Sierra,

Bought it in October 2001 w/31k on the clock. I know the original owner, he only had oil services done on the truck. I have every invoice where he had something done on the truck even the warranty stuff (replaced front seatbelts as the did not lock).

November 2001 EVAP filter problem replaced with updated removable filter unit solved problem Covered in warranty.

July 4, 2002 60k --> Replaced OE Battery sat me down at the firecracker stand (only reason I remember the actual date)

August 2002 --> Voltage regulator went out in Alternator began charging at 18 Volts. Replaced Alternator

84 or 85k I replaced plugs (41.932) and wires had a dead miss later figured out it was the EGR Valve.

90k-ish Tail shaft seal began leaking promptly changed also got 3 new joints and a new swing bearing. While I had the shaft out.

2003 I FINALLY FOUND MY BLASTED water leak I had since I purchased the truck... Passengers side gasket on water pump was leaking (PUMP WAS GOOD)... Replaced water pump, both belts, idlers, and both tensioners.

Fall 2004 99k --> EGR Valve went bad. Rough Idle no DTC's

2005 105k or so --> Replaced Brake Pads, rear park brake shoes, and rotors all the way around. Front brakes were starting to squeal.

130k replaced Plugs again Fuel mileage went from 15 to around 8........ Plugs had over 1/8 inch gap...... Changed to updated 41-985's and replaced wires again.

2007 146k--> I replaced All park brake cables and park brake lever assembly in the truck and changed rear shoes again.... (remove brake prior to driving my truck as its down every time before the truck gets to Park)

Thanksgiving 2008 Replaced every thing under the front end minus the rack. Hunting a low speed POP.... I KNOW what it was afterwards... D#(& Intermediate shaft did not seem to have any play so I did not replace it till december. 4 new Tie Rods, 4 NEW control arms, new alignment bolts and lower control arm bolts, new coil springs, new shocks front and rear, sway bar end links, and sway bar straps and bushings. I guess I should have changed the rack but what the hay its doing good again.

December 2008 Intermediate shaft.

July 2009 160k --> All 5 Brake hoses, replaced pads all the way around and turned rotors. Replaced Battery again and alternator hunting electrical problem when flasher flashed Volts would go from 14.7v. to around 9v. Changed Turn signal bulb on truck in rear. IT WAS THE CAUSE bulb was not blown but fixing to give out (resistance problem in bulb). I have been in the parts industry practically my entire life THAT WAS A FIRST. New belts, idler, and both tensioners as both units pulleys had a wobble again.

August 2009 162K --> Brake control module was rebuilt. ABS light appeared.

I don't think I have missed anything

She rolled over to 166,669 when I pulled in the driveway tonite. I would buy another 99 GMC Sierra if somebody has a brand new one with like less than 1k miles on it...... As, this one has been QUITE a nice truck to own and drive.

Bought my 2007 Classic Sierra WT brand new in Sept 07. I currently have almost 24K miles on the clock. Only problems I've had are the steering shaft crapping out at around 12k, the rear shock bolts loosened up bout the same time. And tonight, I looked at my OEM front tires and they were looking pretty rough!!

I've had my 99 for just over 7 years now and the only thing I've had problems with (other than reg maintenance stuff), was the U joints. Fixed the problem with another driveshaft.

Bought her with 60K KM now she just turned 270K KM.

LOVE my truck.

I will have some pics of her when I get a feel for this place

my old 99 Silverado:

G-80 Locking Diff went kablooey at 80,000 $1600

Fuel sending unit went kablooey at 90,000 $400.00

4X4 switch replaced at 90,000 $45.00

Slip Yoke Clunk (never got it fixed)

Cold Start Knock (went away after 5-10 seconds)

My 99 was a great truck sold her at about 120,000 miles

My current 07 Sierra:

100 miles: On Star module faulty from the factory, replaced under warranty

10,000 miles: Brake pads went bad. Replaced under warranty.

10,000 miles: Power windows squeaking badly- Dealer lubed and cleaned the rails. (Warranty)

12,000 miles: Transmission Sunshell went Kablooey. (4-Speed) Dealer repaired/rebuilt. (Warranty)

20,000 Miles: Brakes Squeaking again. Dealer re-surfaced. (Warranty)

20,000 Miles: Power windows squeaking badly- Dealer lubed and cleaned the rails. (Warranty)

Overall thoughts:

99: Loved her. the GMT-800 was a well put together truck. Build quality was good.

07: (GMT-900) 315HP of the 5.3L vs the 280HP of the 5.3L on my 99 is sweet. Build quality on the 07 SUCKS vs my old 99. Interrior of the 07 sucks as compared to that of my 99. Other then that, I love my 07. Can't wait to get a 2010 2500 Duramax or 1500 6.2L

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
