Top Tier Gas Question

Recommended Posts

Was reading about additives on here and saw where top tier gas was mentioned. I googled it and was surprised to find that BP was not on the list. It seems to me that my truck does better with BP than other brands. What has been your guys experience? Does using top tier gas make much difference over the long term?

Thanks,

Rob

My Grand Dad owned and operated the only fuel station on the North Rim which was a Conoco and he always told us kids to use Shell or Conoco fuel. Guess he was right! I still today only use these two fuel stations and yes I do notice a difference. When I changed my headers at 31K I took a good look at the valves and they were like brand new still.

i heard a rumor from the attendant at shell that their PREMIUM 92 OCT. did not have Ethanol? ANYKNOW?? if so I will always buy that over the other gas for my watercrafts.. the ethanol kills watercrafts!!! Draws in moisture as it sepperates.

I always mix it up. All the majors have their proprietary additives. I like to keep my vehicles changing fuels so no one additive package becomes a problem. I worked in a Shell station while in highschool in the early 70s. I used it in my cars over the yrs and found the additives would form a yellow carbon like buildup in the chambers and on the valves. That was a long time ago, but it bothered me and I gravitated away from Shell.

I have a question for Oldschool327: If you "...only use these two fuel stations..." (Conoco and Shell), how would you notice a difference?

I use Pioneer, Petro Canada as a back up. The mileage iss the best for me with Pioneer, noticeably less with Petro Canada, so I only use them as a back up.

I only run Conoco and Shell in our vehicles. I don't have a good reason for it other than I feel better about running those brands. I have no facts saying if one or both are better than any other brands or not.

I was talking to a mechanic about that a few weeks ago. He had just drained a fuel tank of Casey's (cheap, convenient) gas and a he had a jug of QT gas, which is top tier. FWIW, the top tier gas was about the color between Budweiser and Fat Tire and the cheap gas was the color of Guiness. I don't know what it really means, but it seemed that there were a lot more impurities in the cheap gas.

But her uncle (another mechanic/transmission guy) says it is a bunch of :freak: I always kinda figured that to be the case. But we're kinda trying to get some comparisons in our 2 vehicles. It'll be interesting to see what we find

I use either Shell or BP 93 Octane gas exclusively in all of my Corvette's, bikes and Denali. I use regular 87 octane in the Trailblazer LTZ.

On occasion I will use Exxon but only out of convenience and only on occasion.

I only use Chevron 91, since my tune I get pinging around 3,000 RPM with any other brand/octane. I only have an 87/89 tune so I have to meet up with Justin again at some point and get the truck tuned properly for 91.

Not sure where you got that info but there are more than 3 in the south Louisiana area. Tell the folks working at the Exxon Mobile refinery in Baton Rouge they don't exist....

+1 You may want to check your facts on that.

Just off the top of my head I can name a lot more than three and I know there are more I don't know about.

Valero (NuStar formally part of Valero)

BP

Chevron

ExxonMobil

Shell

ConocoPhillips

Citgo

And more.

I drive by Arco, BP, Unocal, Chevron and Mobil refineries just in my daily driving here in the SoCal area. Maybe they're just optimal contusions....

Spurshot; I will gladly answer that question and I know I was not totally clear.........

The Household baby in San Clemente CA was a 1968 C-10 Stepside with a true Corvette Fuelie 327. Yes the oldschool 327 fuel injection, hence the screen name.

I always knew when my wife had fueled it up at an off brand fuel station after her and the kid would run up to huntington beach or pacific beach on the weekends I was in the field. I would get in and she would ping a little and just not have the same smoothness. Everytime I would ask she would just say all fuel is the same and it does not matter. With the old fuelies one could always notice the little differences in tuning even if it was the gas, no computers to compensate.

So there it is....The difference is Me, not my wife, can tell the difference
