Window A/c Unit Indoors?

Is it possible for a DIYer to create a box so that a window mounted AC unit (such as the one pictured) can be used completely indoors with only an exhaust vent going to the window?

I have a window unit that i'd like to use indoors, but cannot justify buying a indoor specific model for around $300+

I know the compressor must get fresh air flow, so I was thinking of building the box with openings on both sides w/ fans. A little cool air loss/recycling is ok.

Yes. You will need to find a way to port the hot air out of the area you are trying to cool.

How far are you going to run this exhaust ducting? The size you would need would be pretty large. I'd think you would need a fan on the end of the duct pulling air through it.

I think its going to be more of a problem then what its worth as you also have to find a way to get rid of the water thats going to come out of the unit but the main thing is air circ. around the unit.

I was thinking of building a box around it with air inlets in from the sides and exhaust out of the rear. The exhaust ducting could be easily a foot or so if it needed to be short.

as for the condensation drain, I can tap the bottom of the unit so it drains into a hose which also leads outside.

You're only going to have it 1 foot from an exterior opening? Another thing would be if you are exhausting your units heat to the outdoors, you will be using room air to provide the exhaust flow. You will need to have a supply of air into the room to replace the air you're exhausting.

What room are you trying to cool and why do you need this setup? I'm not trying to be nosey, just curious.

Me too.

The window I have opens from left to right and are tall. I have a "shim" in place to take up the space above the AC unit.

I was thinking the shim could be as minimal as possible if there were only a vent hose going to it.

Just trying to (hopefully) increase the efficiency and decrease the window opening.
