Storing Wheels For Winter

I saw a topic for this somewhere else but i since lost it. I remember people saying lay them on their side with a piece of plywood underneath. What is the reason for this or what is your opinion?

To keep them off the ground critters and moisture?

Rubber doesn't like ozone or UV. You can keep them out of the sunlight and if you're really serious about extending their storage life, bag them and purge with nitrogen. I suspect most people will opt for out of the sunlight (covered or in a shed/garage) and up off the ground.

I usually put mine in my basement. I stack them up on top a small skid I got from work that has a plywood top.

If your storing wheels as well you may want to give them a nice liberal coat of wax or two. And some tire care products don't hurt either...on both sides.

I have never owned a set of aftermarket wheels. Now that I am ready to purchase a set, I am reading more and more about winter care. I live in North-central Oklahoma. Winters get cold and nasty. What is the main concern when thinking of winter weather? Is it the salt that is usually spread on the roads? Oklahoma most generally opts for spreading sand. Should I hold off till spring? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to GMT!! If you can keep your factory ones then you don't have to worry about ruining the aftermarket. Otherwise winter will cause the chrome to pit and eventually flake on some aftermarket wheels depending on how hard they are to clean and how much you clean them!!! I bet the aftermarkets are cheaper now than in the spring!!!
