Engine Life

Gentlemen,

I have had lots of experience with Chevy small block, big block and now the vortec engines. I have never used anything but quality dino lubricants and have never seen any wear inside any of these engines even with 200 k on them.

My question is this. Has anyone actually worn out a properly engineered (chevy) engine?

Not in about 40 years. With today's engines and the advancement of oils, only neglect will ware one out. If you maintain the engine properly it will go many thousands of miles With the exception of ones right foot, you can break anything.

I remember reading a post about a worn out 5.3L motor on fullsizechevy.com a few years back... the guy had been using it as a delivery truck and put something like 413k on it in eight or nine years. As I recall, the valves or lifters had started making some funny noises from wear.

..I'll be pretty pleased if I get 400k out of my truck .

the 5.3 in my 2003 suburban has about 145k on it now and its running perfectly... no ticking or whistling at all and it has all power and its smooth. I am very impressed with the 5.3 as the only thing i have EVER replaced was and alternator and battery.

Depends on what you mean by worn out.

I have went to rebuild some gen 1 SBC and BBC and they were bored too far over to re-bore...but than you could just re-sleeve.

I have seen the deck become too short, from too many rebuilds.

I have seen a tonne and a half of them that just have no more compression and are burning oil, like in the tune of quarts per day....but thats just a 2000 dollar fix...:lol::D

To me worn out is un-rebuildable.... and the only time you cannot rebuild is if the block is cracked.
