That's it? The rest of the joints are apparently lubricated enough to last two years.

Really? I'm used to the older generations where you have the inner and outer tie rod ends, idler arm, pittman arm, and others. The older 4x4's had around 7 right? Been taking the new generation to the dealer, dont wanna lay in snow outside or 20 degree weather in the garage to change fluids and grease right now. Man you sure pay for it though!!!

I hope the dealer is doing this for you! My last truck I took it to the dealer for the first few months I had it because we bought it in november. Like you I was not into freezing my ass off to change oil and grease joints. Anyway come spring, i found that my ball joints (if I remember correctly) were bone dry, the front wheels have to be removed to get to them. Also there was a mouse nest under the air filter. The truck had sat in a barn for almost a year before I bought it. I left them dry, and left the mouse nest under the air filter, pulled all my service bills, and took it to the dealer. I asked them to do the service again, when they were done and I was about to sign for it I asked if I could look at it before I signed. I went over popped the hood, lifted out the air filter and much to my amazment the mouse nest was still there! Damn I said, it says on my service report that my air filter was checked as "OK", then I pulled the last few reports out and they said the same thing.

 

Right away the service manager came over, I told him what I found at home, that I brought it to the dealer to test them, and that I also wanted to see the ball joints, they were still dry! I got a new air filter, and new ball joints on both sides for no charge, but that was the last time I took anything to that dealer!

Thanks for the heads up!!! I really appreciate it! You bet your ass I'm gonna be checking my front end and other areas. For almost 60 dollars a service they sure as hell better be doing what they should. It's terrible you just cant trust anyone anymore.

I just want to be clear, I am by no means saying that this is every dealer, and every tech. I have 2 GM dealers left in my area (1 is GMC/Saturn/Caddy, the other Pontiac and Buick). and those wont last much longer, just because of the brands. Our chevy dealer has been shutdown. The GMC dealer has been my problem as far as service goes, I used to know a salesman really well, he took great care of us. but since he moved on its a waste of time and money to even think about going there. the Pontiac dealer has started selling Honda's and will only service cars that they have sold!

 

I am just offering up what I have been through, so that none of you have the same trouble, some dealers are great! When I knew the salesmen I had everything done with no issue, never even called the service dept. I just called my salesmen and dropped it off to him, he would take care of whatever I needed, give me a car off the lot for the time I was without mine, and would make sure when I picked up the truck it was full of gas and washed.

 

I know this is not normal practice and I dont expect it evertime I go to the dealer, I know I got it bc we bought a car, leased 2 cars, and bought our silverado from him all with 3 years, plus he ended up selling a truck to a buddy, and 2 used cars to family members. When I go to the dealer for service I want it done, and I want it done right, thats what I am paying for! And when I want parts I want my 10% discount without pulling teeth.

I know exactly what you are saying. We have a great friend as a salesman and have become good friends with the service manager at our local chevy. Btwn myself, parents, and where I work, we have brought them massive amounts of business. He has given me some great deals and help on a lot of things. It's just never bad to recheck when times are this tuff, and they are TUFF. You dont want to believe it could happen but it does.

There was something like 10 on the GMT800's. On the GMT900's only those 2. I'm happy/sad about that. Happy, since those 2 up those arms buried up in the frame were a PITA to grease, but sad now, as I'd rather have zerks to lube the front end. :thumbs:

Here again, we see more cost cutting measures on the 1/2 ton trucks. Like MS3 dale said, there are 2 located on the outer tierod ends, the rest are "lubricated for life" however long that may be. 2500/3500HDs have more grease "zerks", just did mine for the second time a few weeks ago (I believe there was 9 if I'm not mistaking).

 

We have a few ford E-250/350 vans at work with "lubed for life" ball joints, every single truck has had a least one or more fail between 45-60,000 miles, and guess what, when brought to the dealer to be replaced they use ones that HAVE a grease fitting (I wonder why??????).

 

And Brett, to answer your question, you usually only want enough pumps of grease so that you can see the boot expand SLIGHTLY, you don't want to expand it too much, overtime this may put too much stress on it and it could crack/split overtime, so as a rule of thumb probably no more than 2-3 pumps

My deuce and half truck has about 35 grease zerks on it. Should I be happy? :rollin:

 

All six U joints and all three drive shaft slip yokes have a zerk. So do the front leaf spring mounts. There is one even on the pintle hook swivel bearing. And a whole bunch on the steering linkage.

I like grease able stuff.... It wears out slower.....

 

I wish I had recirculating ball steering in my truck......... Rack and Pinion just does not give feedback and has soft and fluffy feeling...

total possibility of 22............... and probably one i some locations.....

 

However I do get tired greasing my No-till seed drill press....... It has 26 grease fittings on each side........ yeah that is 52 thank god for Lincoln Rechargeable grease guns...

HAHA, try standing looking out a glass window and hearing tires spinning in the service department...... Then see your truck come sliding out of their right by the window........ Service writer walk back in and say your truck is ready..... I took it in for the tailgate cable recall (I did not really care about them putting them on just asked for the cables).... His remark, well, "your gas pedal sticks"...... It got quite wild for a few minutes.... My pedal does not STICK... Anywhoooo, somebody standing outside walked in....... Lot manager..... He was quite inquisitive about why he heard spinning in the shop!! I was still standing their....

Granted, it's been years ago but when I worked for the Cadillac dealer we checked everything within reason. Tire pressure while the oil was draining, undercarriage, belts, hoses, filters, you name it. We even greased the chassis on the older Devilles and such. It took next to no time and we did this even for a Quicklube as we could multitask while the oil was draining, refilling, etc. We were encouraged to suggest anything the car needed to make more money both for the dealership and ourselves and in turn take care of the customers, and I can't count the number of times I brought a customer into my bay to check out a cracked belt or dirty air filter. Then again, the dealership had a loyal customer base (including Jimmy Dean) and was run by people who cared about what a "Moore Cadillac" was.

    • 37's would probably fit with a 3" lift. GM only has two gear ratios for these trucks 3.73 for gas and 3.42 for diesel. And they can't be programmed for anything else at the moment. The rough country module just corrects the speedometer and odometer to adjust for tire size it's not a programming device.   You haven't said if your truck is gas or diesel, but for a gas truck the 10L1000 with 3.73 gears has a lower final drive ratio than the 6L90 it replaced would if it were swapped to 4.10s. GM used the same 3.73 gearing in 6 speed gas trucks. I don't think you'll have any issue running 37's with the 10 speed other than the reduction in mpg and towing/weight capacity which is as much of a function of the lift as the tire size.
    • Actually, it probably was the brakes.  It's weird the way the messages came across, but I took it to the dealer thinking that something was wrong with the sensor and in fact, the rear brakes were shot.  What I don't understand is why the messages never said, your brake pads are low.  First I got the message I posted above, taking about new pads being detected.  Then I got a message saying that the system needed repaired.  It never said, change your brake pads.
    • Did the KYBs keep it the same height in the front? I was concerned that pre-assembled assembly would raise it up an inch to standard non-z60 height.. I guess which it would make the rake 1 inch instead of 2 inches.

I like that inquisitive flexibility about you Atlas.    No the process isn't sterile. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of miles of piping, vessels, pumps. Chevron, the people I worked for, were keenly aware that there is a market for what is known as their "ISOCLEAN" line of lubricants. These are lubricants that are the same as those sold bulk that are further processed by filtration to a level your particular application demands. They will filter and package and provide lab documentation as required. Do not kid yourself. Every gallon of oil that goes into a Chevron Turbine, reciprocating compressor, generator is prefiltered and tested before being charged. Lest wise it was when I was there in the plants I worked in.    There are requirements set by manufactures for the cleanliness of the oils used in their equipment. OTR such as CUMMINS has standards shared with customers on this. Commercial interest selling to Ma and Pa do, but don't share that information. Not even upon request but internally, they do exist.    The GM study sited, (Graph from Machinery Lubrication in previous post) only shows "relative" importance.  I find that fascinating. By constructing the graph like this they admit there are dozens of factors in engine life and via scientific method determined the effect of 'relative cleanliness' on engine life not in miles but in 'FACTORS'. This allows a certain amount of reverse engineering does it not?   They even provided some touchstones. Beta 75 as a reference point. Wonderful stuff!!   Smaller blenders CAN and some DO take the time and effort to do better than a refinery or large bulk blender, like Warren Oil, in improving the "in the can" cleanliness. No I don't have a list but testing could generate that information.    Again, but one of several levers we can pull to improve engine life. The simplest is keeping a clean work station while doing your own oil changes.
