Nail Right At The Edge Of The Sidewall

Wife's was saying the TPMS light was on.... and sure enough I found a Nail on the tire.

It is leaking very slowly and its right at the edge. Do you guys think its repairable?

I think its too close to the sidewall to be fixed.

 

They are Bridgestones and I paid like $180 a piece 2 years ago. I got maybe 15k miles on them.

I hate to replace just one. I guess I'll see what the shop will say. Arrr.. not good week so far.

Unfortunately, this is way too close to the sidewall and that tire is toast. I suspect that this is what you will hear from the tire shop too. The damaged area of the tire sees way too much flexing to be safe with any kind of a repair. You could plug it and use if for a while at limited speeds, but a patch/plug repair will cause the patch inside to curl up and detach due to flexing.

 

You can always use a tube inside the tire and not have to plug the hole at all.

Might be fixable with a patch plug. 2 weeks after I got my truck, I got a nail in the tire pretty close to were yours is and got it patched/plug at NTB. These are not like motorcycle tires were there is massive rpm's and centrifugal force to deal with, and you don't plan on going off road? If your truck is used for daily city driving at no more than highway speeds, you should be ok with a patch plug....

 

You will probably get different answers from different tire shops... Most of them likely will want to err on side of caution and recommend you replace it..

 

NTB patched mine, if I went to a Firestone or Goodyear they might have said no to patching it and told me to get a new one and you really can't replace one, so that in turn would mean replacing 2....

Hate to say it, but a buddy of mine had the same thing and was told the tire is a loss...

Not repairable.

 

you could 'try" a patch/plug... but a good shop won't install one. As previously stated, that section of the tire is constantly flexing. the likelihood of the plug leaking is high and therefore the liability is too high.

I once wore a tire repairman's hat at one point in my life and I can tell you that I would not let my family drive on a repair in that area. What's more, I would replace the tire on the opposite side of the axle too.

 

The real problem is sidewall flex, not rotational speed/force. BTW, any repair that is NOT a plug and patch from the inside is not recommended by ANY tire manufacturer. They also will not warrant the speed rating of the tire after a repair. In other words, if this was a Z rated tire before the repair, it aint no more.

Get out the checkbook looks like its time for new tires!!! :cool: My wife had a nail in the edge of the tread. $500 dollars later...............Problem solved.

Just to make you feel better, years ago I bought a new Mustang GT and it had expensive speed rated Good Year tires on it. After only 600 miles I found a huge nail in the middle of the sidewall of one of the tires. Had to buy a new tire for $ 150 plus mounting and balancing. Crap like this happens to everybody.

Thats all I do all day is fix cars, trucks and mostly Bigrig tires, that nail is nothing and if they tell you at the shop no, then go to the next one. just a scam to sell you new tires!! anyone that has been doing tires for many years will tell you this its the gas station tire shops that have no idea!!! get it fixed..

If it is still in the steel belts I'd put a plug patch in it... NAPA 710-1598. BUT IF ITS outta the steel belts its trash!!! Did you buy the Road Hazard Plan?????? was that no Me either...

 

The set I just took off, I put on the week before Katrina. Neighbor put a roof on the week of Katrina and I got all 4 BRAND NEW TIRES with those plug boots........ But I put 70 some odd thousand miles on them before I changed them(they started dry rotting in the treads).... But made me mad none the less He wouldn't let them put the dumpster in his yard HE MADE THEM PUT it in the street. Whatttta jerk.... I will be glad when he moves OR I DO. They were around 600 bucks for 4 of them. Plus 15 a pop to fix the nails..... I think I ended up with 7 before he got that roof replaced(and I was walking around with my magnate picking up nails every day). I had one in every tire the first day. yeah that is right 4 flats.

 

I guess where I was going was I sympathize with ya on the nail..... Dude

buy a new tire.

You'll hate doing it, but soon something else will take that hate place,

and you won't remember that stupid tire issue.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
