Dedicated mower...then definitely a zero turn. See if you can rent a regular lawn mower and cut your grass once.

My cub cadet is from a guy with 9 acres. He bought it, used it for one season, and bought a Husqvarna 72" zero turn. He bartered away the Cub to me.

I have a John Deere GT235 at my house and a John Deere GX 335 at my parents house for some grass cutting jobs. The GX has the power steering and hydraulic lift, differential lock, and I can cut grass pretty fast if I have sharp blades on.

I mow 1.5 Acres with a Craftsman LT1000 with the 19.5 HP B&S Vertical Shaft Vanguard, and 42" Deck. (FYI, this is the 2nd deck on this mower as the original deck was stricken with Metal Cancer.) we have used this mower for 19 Seasons, and the Engine is as powerful as the day we bought it back in 1999!

Toro Zero turn 60" commercial Z-master. Its a beast, about 1200lbs, but its cuts a perfect cut at about 11mph. They cost, but are well worth it.

JD 318 here with full cab, mower, and snowblower. One of the best things I have ever bought and it was used. This is a real tractor, not just a mower.

As for other brands, I do have to say that some of those Craftsmans can really take a beating.

I know this in an older thread but but since I'm a new guy I've been surfing around checking things out. Some people think I'm nuts but I enjoy our yard and keeping things looking good. I mow 5 acres and enjoy having a large yard for the kids and the dogs to run in. I bit the bullet and purchased a new JD 950A zero turn last spring and love it, 72" deck and 31hp engine it'll mow some grass :driving:

I tortured myself mowing 5 acres for years with a 54" deck lawn tractor. Why I did that I don't know, i just couldn't bring myself to spend $10,000. Finally I bought a Kubota B series small tractor with hydrostatic, a 60" deck and an end loader. Best money I ever spent period. You will have so many uses for the small tractor on property with 5 acres or more you won't believe it. Don't waste your time with garden tractors or mowers. Later I added a box scraper, small brush/bush hog, gin pole, etc. A zero turn mower would be a nice second piece of equipment to have but not too useful with the hills here.

We have a Dixon Ram ZTR, 48 inch deck and 26 hp Briggs. Tried ones with the Kawasaki and Kohler engines, but liked the Briggs best. What we had before was a Deere rider, not near as good as the zero turn. You're looking at about half the cutting time if you go with a ZTR. We cut 3 different properties with it, and it's been really reliable. Prolly about 10 acres in all.

    • Thanks, all. It sounds like keeping the software "as is" is the best course of action.
    • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overengineering   Excerpt from the above link: (BTW the above is a 90 second read)   [Quote]   A story about very precise engineering is given in the 1858 story The Deacon's Masterpiece or, the Wonderful "One-hoss Shay": A Logical Story by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., which tells of a carriage (one-horse shay) Because it had been engineered so that no single piece failed first – no piece was over-engineered relative to the others, and they thus all collapsed at the same time. A similar quote by Ferdinand Porsche claimed "the perfect race car crosses the finish line in first place and immediately falls into pieces."[5]   [End Quote}   By Engineering's  own definition then; the AFM and Torque Converters, 4-5-6 clutch assembly of the 6L80E, and a dozen other common chronic parts and systems failures are "UNDER ENGINEERED". And by their own definition done so with INTENT. Ya can't have it both ways OEM's.

    • I was in Utah this week attempting a bow hunt in the Wasatch mountains with friends.  On the evening of the first hunt, making my way across a ridge to a friends camp, the upper control arm on the driver's side separated, the CV axle got trashed, and the wheel was dang near at a 45 degree angle to the ground.  I was able to get it towed off the mountain and into town about 3:00 am, and spent the remainder of the night in an O'Reilly's parking lot.  Luckily, there was a Chevrolet dealership not to far away so I was able to get to the dealership and pick up a new CV and UCA.  It would have been a few days before they could have gotten to the truck and I brought tools with me on hunt since it was a two day drive to get there, so I did the repairs myself in the O'Reilly's parking lot.      What's interesting is that the UCA ball joint didn't break, it just popped out of the bottom of the UCA.  There was VERY LITTLE evidence of grease on the ball joint or in the socket, and you could see where the ball joint had warbled out part of the socket over time.  I guess that's what happens over 186K miles of use :)   Big Kudos to O'Reilly's for letting me work on the truck in their parking lot.  However, they made a $150+ off of me from the purchase of various tools, so I guess it was in their best interest anyways :)   Getting towed off the mountain.   UCA Ball Joint Socket   Trashed CV   Suspension disconnected and UCA and CV Removed   New UCA and CV installed with the suspension buttoned up.
    • My family still laughs at me when they see me drive up in the minivan. Same with less than a V-8 truck. It helps that I have choices. I don’t think I could only have a minivan as the one and only vehicle as much as I like it. And I wouldn’t pass up a good buy on an older V-8 reg cab GM truck. Could you live Raven as the only ride?
