2010 Silverado Crew - Noise From Rear Pass. Corner

OK,We have a Body Shop and do some Sublet Repair for our Chevy Dealer.I was able to get them to let Me do the latest TSB on My 2010 CC including the Thicker Insulation Pad.I also added extra DynaMat on the inside Cab panel. It probably reduced noise by 25 to 30%. But............I just pulled a 2007 CC Silverado in to do Factory Heated Seats and Leather and found the Main issue,The 07 Cab Insulation Pad while being thick like the TSB replacement is also covered with a thick layer of rubber which the replacement is not.So a TSB with multiple revisions and pissed of Customers all stems from using a cheaper part...... big suprise! I am now trying to find out if the 07 style is still produced or all we have is this crappy replacement......

I am interested in why some trucks have the noise and some don't? Is it just some folks tolerate it and don't complain? or is it truly some trucks are quiet and some have the noise?

I believe some people just don't notice, this is My 3rd GMT900 so the difference was very noticable

Learned this on another forum. There is a difference part # for the old insulater and the new one. I have a 2010 CC and it has the old one installed with no noise.

Part #20790482 rear insulator panel for a 2009 Crew Cab, Extended Cab and regular cab pickup used in the year 2009. NO 2009's have a problem with wind noise from the rear. This insulator has the black rubber coating that does a better job of muffling the wind noise.

Part #20983473 -which is used in all 2011's and some 2010's. This insulator has no black rubber coating ans lets our wind noise pass through into our ears.

I bet if you replaced the insulator panel with the old one the noise would be reduced substanially. It is amazing how spme companies will do anything to save $10 on the cost of manufacturing an expensive automobile.

Has anyone tried switching out their insulator for this 2009 part? Just wondering what the results were. Would just like to get the problem fixed with one visit to the dealership.

FYI...I did this switch on my crew cab, there is a slight difference but it barely helps at all.

Take a look at this earlier thread. In the 15th post of the thread I was inspired to take a pool noodle and try a hillbilly mod. I spray painted the pool noodle black and sealed the open ends with silicone calk. (I didn't care for the look of a sky blue pool noodle on a gray truck.)

Anyway, I cut the styrofoam to about a 20-24 inch length and wedged it up between the bed and back of the cab in a u-shape around the sides and bottom of the cab vents on both sides. This seems to have eliminated the noise, which of course seems to point to a problem with the OEM cab vents. I have run the pool noodle in the area since June with no ill effects. I know this sounds ridiculous, only because it is, but with all the threads about this problem and GM's failure to fix it, I'm ok with my "solution."

My one concern is that during winter salt months that this would hold in moisture and salt, so I'm probably going to remove these as cold weather comes on, but at least my truck is quiet 8 months out of the year, and that's more than a lot of other owners can say.

I took my right rear seat out today and experimented by rolling up a hand towel about 1.5" thick and duct taped it over the right side vent on the inside of the cab, then taped around insulation edge thereby sealing the insulation to the back of the cab. This does help quite a bit to lessen the noise but it is still noisier than it should be...of course it renders the vent useless to plug it with a towel so it isnt a long term fix but I think it clearly means the vent is the problem. I wish I could see the difference in the early GMT 900 vents and what my '11 has now to see why the early trucks are quiet and mine is so damn loud. I drove an 07 GMT 900 crew just like mine last week and it was definitely quieter than my '11. It is ridiculous to have a new truck that has this problem!

I rode in the back seat of a 07 Classic 2500HD crew Duramax today as well to see how loud they are and there is night and day difference between that truck and mine and it was even a noisy diesel. The 06 essentially has zero noise.

Just an FYI, there was another bulliten issued in December of 2011 concerning this noise issue. It was applied to my truck, a GMC 2010 CC, a couple weeks ago and I am happy to report that there is no longer ANY road noise coming from the rear of my cab. :) If I am not mistaken, there's a new pad installed along with some insulating foam that was applied. Sorry I do not have more details. Just happy the noise is gone........

If anyone (dealer connections) has access to this new tsb/bulletin, would you care to post a copy? I'd love to have a quiet truck, too.

Any further updates on the cab noise?

I just purchased a 2012 Chevy LTZ 2500HD CCSB 4x4 and I also notice the wind type noise from the right rear. In fact I pulled over to check thinking a window or the rear slider was open. Mentioned it to the dealer and of course they had never heard of such a thing......idiots.

On another forum I found this bulletin number:

TSB 10-08-58-00IF. Any one have any luck with this fix?

As many of you know, noises within a vehicle can come from many different sources. The latest bulletin (10-08-58-001E) you are talking about actually has 3 different corrections depending on the noise and vehicle involved. Wind noises are especially hard to pin point as they can come from many different sources both exterior and interior. We know that many customers were frustrated while we developed an improvement for this condition. Also, levels of noise within a vehicle are very subjective based on each customer’s level of tolerance and type of noise. We have worked to develop a correction for this noise which is evident to the number of updates to the bulletin. We will continue to monitor feedback from our customers to make sure we have met their expectations. For anyone that is experiencing this issue, we encourage you to bring your truck in to the dealer so that the latest repair can be performed. If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via private message. Thank you.

Tricia, GM Customer Service.

Hey Tricia - don't know if you are still following this forum - or even if you have a different job assignment - but here goes.

I have had this problem since new. It has gotten worse with time. I originally thought it was from the springs squeaking - but then I noticed it every time I closed the door. Showed this to the service rep at my local GM dealership and she said 'that's odd - I've never seen that before'. then she checked service bulletins and couldn't find anything.

This is driving be nuts squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak all the time. Even considered trade just to get rid of the squeak.

Please fix this
