I know there have been a lot of complaints over the quality of paint on new Gm trucks......

This is my 5th NBS truck and by far the worst paint I have had.

I have a 2010 silverado in black granite and during the 10 mile ride home from the dealer the day I picked it up, I somehow managed to get 2 nasty chips on the hood.....over the next week I ran without step bars, never on gravel roads, and managed to pick up 8 chips in various spots on the bottom of my doors.....now I see 2 chips on the bedside a foot down from the bedrail (odd location)

WTF I have 1400 miles on this truck and these chips go right to the bare metal

i am very anal with the condition of my trucks so neglect is not an issue

I am not happy, especially after paying extra for the premium paint colour

Is there a TSB on this or is it something that I have to live with?

sucks but at least you know HOW it got there....most of mine are mystery chips

twice I have washed my 2010 sierra and found a paint chip on my microfiber mitt. I havent been able to locate the area they came from. Also, on the bottom corner of my hood I have a hardened droplet of excess clear coat that should have been spread out evenly on my hood.

My truck is also full of rock chips.

And I am also extremely anal about the condition of my vehicle.

I am quite upset with GMs quality so far to be honest.

The leather/vinyl on my backseat (which has never been used) was cracking. I took it in for warranty work and they sent it away. It came back looking worse, with the plastic trim pieces all scratched from being kicked around the shop floor, and the stitch lines were far from straight.

The chrome has been rusting.

The wheels have lost their finish over a single winter.

The list goes on.

Anybody got a paint meter? That makes me wonder what they have cut out..... Or did the just go water born. I have heard it chips easier..?

I am looking at a couple 2010's one at one dealer another at another dealer..... Trying to decide do I want to sign my name on the bottom of the paper or not. haha

Yes, I do have an electronic PTG; what measurement are you looking for, specifically? The thickness of a new 2010 vs., say, my 2008?

Oh and Mark (snarkee) -- ANOTHER new truck? From a Sierra All Terrain, to an Avalanche, to now a Silverado.... You sure you're not a dealer employee getting demos every few months? :)

Find a gmt-800 and compare it to a gmt-900???

To be chipped to the bare metal seems odd, as the sealer primer bonds to well prepped paint like stink to sh*t. So, if the primer comes off its a metal prep issue. Now, i believe that gm's sealer primer is gray which may be what you are seeing. As far as easy-chip paint, water borne paint seems to chip easier because of the catalyst and the fact you bake it on IMO. Also, baking the clearcoat on makes it harder and more or less shatters when hit by debris. Or, gm has skimped out on the number of clearcoats they apply. I have been assisting my dad in putting out show winning paint jobs for almost 20 years. Dupont was always the choice for us when it came to chemical catalyst paints. You put a few healthy coats of clear on a properly prepped car, that paint took a beating. I don't know much about water borne so this post is purely my opinion. Stone chips are 100% unavoidable so my only recommendation is Hood protector, mud flaps and a whole lot of wax. IMO take it for what its worth

I got behind a rock truck with my new Avy. Had about 1500 miles on it and a rock smack the hood. Looked like someone shot it with a BB gun. Chipped to metal and dented it. I was PISSED!

Edit: yeah GMT800 vs GMT 900's would be a good comparison.... Just don't do mine.... Most has been resprayed at least the clear pretty much all over...

Panel flex? Excessive flex could cause the primer to pop and flake off.... Added with the hard object and flex I could see flakes down to metal... I have not got aggressive with the panels on the trucks I have looked at, so I don't know how elastic they are. I've been bumping metal for 10.........

I hope these paint chipping issues are not a rerun of the 2007 Impala paint problems. Evidently they had some kind of the problem at the plant with their paint process because paint on many of these cars, especially Victory Red color was chipping like crazy all over the car. They have identified and corrected the problem. Go to edmunds.com, Chevrolet Impala forums, then to Imapla paint issues forum.

After installing GM moulded splash guards and GM bug shield, I have seen very little, if any paint damage on my truck. The leading vertical edge of hoods on 2006+ Silverado trucks is a very dumb design from paint damage standpoint. I like GMC Sierra hoods much better. You almost have to install a bug shield on Silverados if you do not want your paint damaged. It is just a matter of time.
