As promised a couple months ago. Oil Filter dissection. I will be adding some more information and a couple used filters soon. Also, I am trying to get the filter media tested in a blind study.

Thanks for the info. The Mods should consider placing this in the Tech Wiki eventually so it will be easy to find from here on out

This is good stuff man! Never actually saw inside any of my filters. I've got the K&N on mine now. I agree though - it should be part of the Tech Wiki.

No they are not the same. I think the testing will tell the tail as to the best media. But just looking through them look at the construction of each....... I am going to do a write up on each, just at a loss for time right now.

Thanks - just from looking at those photos, you can sort of make a determination on which just might be the good filters and which the bad. As always, it looks like 2 less expensive Fram filters come up on the bad list, those end caps look terrible.

Looks like the NAPA Gold are some of the best to me. That's what I have been using for couple years now since they have been doing these comparison tests

Look at them and see if you cam determine the beta ratio...

Beta

Ratio -- % Efficient

2 -- 50.00

5 -- 80.00

10 -- 90.00

15 -- 93.33

20 -- 95.00

25 -- 96.00

30 -- 96.67

40 -- 97.50

50 -- 98.00

75 -- 98.67

100 -- 99.00

125 -- 99.20

250 -- 99.60

500 -- 99.80

750 -- 99.87

1000 -- 99.90

2000 -- 99.95

5000 -- 99.98

10000 -- 99.99

So in WIX's Beta Rato format:

Beta Ratio: 2/75=8/22

Means Beta Ratio 2 (50% efficient) @ 8 microns, and Beta Ratio 75 (98.67% efficient) @ 22 microns. Red with red, blue with blue is how the numbers correlate with WIX's format.

Beta Ratio: 2/20=12/25

Means Beta Ratio 2 (50% efficient) @ 12 microns, and Beta Ratio 20 (95% efficient) @ 25 microns. Red with red, blue with blue is how the numbers correlate with WIX's format.

That first ACDelco (PF46), I have to wonder if that's a counterfit. All of the PF46's I have purchased have had an outer case that looks like the pictured PF46E. Additionally, the inner-tube of the PF46's I've purchased in the past have holes, not slots. So, I don't know. That pictured PF46 kind of looks like a cheap knock-off to me.

As an aside, what is the PF46E for? What is this whole E series thing?

Ah, further examination has brought this (from this link http://www.acdelcotechconnect.com/pdf/09TSS-062.pdf):

Filter Design Change - PF46, PF47, PF52 and PF61 (WD Bulletin 09D-054)

ACDelco is implementing a design change on the PF46, PF47, PF52 and PF61 ACDelco Oil Filters due to

capacity constraints on the current product design. GM engineers have approved the new design which will

begin to be incorporated in upcoming vehicle designs. This OE approved and manufactured filter provides

the same Duraguard filtration performance as the previous design and specifically utilizes the original

ACDelco media that traps particles up to 25 microns. Additional features include a slightly smaller can, fully

covered baseplate, non metallic end caps and high strength nylon core. This newly designed oil filter has

the benefits of not only bringing excellent filtration performance, it is also environmentally friendly with

components that can now be easily separated into steel, oil and parts to incinerate, resulting in less waste.

At this time, the Durapack versions of the alternative design filter will begin shipping. The boxed or

individually packaged versions will utilize the available production capacity on the original design, where

possible, and will otherwise begin to rollover to the new alternative design.

ACDelco appreciates your business and stands behind each and every filter that we distribute with pride

and confidence. Should you have any concerns or questions at all, please feel free to contact your local

ACDelco sales representative.

How do you know if the filter is of a good quality? I've used the K&N and just dropped in a Bosch premium just yesterday.

That is where the media testing will come into play......

The PF46 88984215.... It was some of the first filters after the PF59 going obsolete..... Came from the GM Dealer...... I have about 6 more left of that filter.......
