Replacing Fuel Pump

Had a few questions on replacing the fuel pump.

Last night I started in on the project. Made lots of headway and am in processes of reattaching tank after replacing pump. I noticed that the fuel pump (Fuel) side goes to a unit just forward of the tank. What is the name of that unit and what is it for? It's about 2 1/2 " high and 1 1/2" wide, about 9" long, and is wrapped in a metal cover. All black...

That's your evap system for your emissions. It collects gas vapors and lets the tank vent and suck without letting any "harmful" gases into the environment. It should have a lot of plastic pipes going to it, and if you look under your hood one goes into the intake for vapor suction. It doesn't have anything to do with the fuel pump or fuel pump sender and should not be any problem unless one of the plastic lines is cracked.

Thanks! I didn't know what it was, hey one other question. Does the fuel tank then have to be "under pressure" to function correctly?

With these newer systems the gas cap has a vent in it to keep too much pressure from forming. Actually, the tanks sometimes keep a little vacuum in them, but this is not required to function.
