Passenger Door Speaker

Hi guys I got a NBS GMC W/T 1500

Couple of questions about these stock speakers:

 

The other day I noticed my passenger door speaker was cutting in and out, eventually it stopped working all together.

 

I took the door panel off. Got the speaker out.

They use a plug to hook up these stock speakers??!! (And what the hell, it was in a white plastic house type thing, almost like a shell around it.) Guess I gotta do mods if the speaker dies/gets replaced?

Anyways hooked speaker up outside truck tested ok, so ok I hook it up to the truck and bam! It works great now! I got the door panel back on. Later in the day the speaker stopped working a few kilometers on down the road.

 

So what should I do cut the plug off the harness in the door and just hook the wires up direct to the other Red and Black hook ups on the speaker. (Labeled 1 and 2 I believe one on each side of plugin, I know they run the speaker I tested them also). I could try contact cleaner I guess. I don't wanna take this door panel off a 3rd time. I'll probably keep the door panel off for few days regardless of the fix, to prevent un-needed clip breakage.

cut the clip off and crimp on some connectors to right to the speaker.

Yep, that's a cheap ass GM speaker for you, they always quit. But, I'd just cut the wires and put new ends on them, myself. Although, if you're anal about cutting OEM wires, best buy sells adapters for the speakers. Or anywhere online for that matter sells them.

I'm cutting/crimping them in the morning, how long can I keep everything OEM anyways, the trucks getting old. I need to learn to "let it go".

 

It's not like anyone sees something like that, and I'm sure thats how the guys at a stereo shop would fix it.

 

And what is this white plastic housing? It cant be removed from the speaker it looks like. Im not sure what speakers from bestbuy would mount like, but Im sure I'll be drilling some holes when the OEM ones blowout.

I believe the factory speakers are clipped in, and you'll have to drill holes for the new speakers.

i don't know how your truck is set up but on my 2001 i didn't have to do any drilling or anything to change out the front speakers. The only modifications i had to do was to the rear extended cab doors since i went for 4x6 plates to 6.5" speakers. If i remember right the clip in device on mine was just a holder type thing. pop the speaker out of it put the new one in it and then clip it back into the door panel. Do you have pictures?
