Brakes At 100,000 Miles

2005 Crew Cab:

So I'm thinking at 100K miles I at least need to change the front pads since they are originals. I buy the pads and then after pulling the wheels and looking at the existing pads I see they've only worn down no more than 25%. that can't be right. Maybe my rears are doing all the braking? I've never dealt with drums before so I'm a little hesitant to go back there. Should I just bring it to a shop and have them take a look at it?

Pull a tire off, pull the drum off and look at the pads

I've never owned a GMT-800 but I've heard the brakes are really good from the factory.

Don't be afraid of working on drum brakes. You'll find help on the internet. Take a picture of what it looks like before you start taking things apart and then you'll know how to put it back together. Heck, I taught my daughters how to do it when they were in high school. I showed the older one how to do it on one side and then the two of them did it all by themselves on the other side.

If you've never pulled a drum off before, don't be afraid to beat the drum  . Sometimes the need a little extra persuasion. A heavy dead blow is good but a regular hammer works too.

These truck come with long life pads form the factory and they are really good. I got 110k on my 02 Z71 and could have got more. Should have left them alone. Wouldn't hurt to look at the rears at that mileage.

I just checked my 02 when I put new shocks on it and my pads still have plenty of life left in them. My truck has 97k on it. I'm not touching them until they need it.

I'm thinking the front pads are glazed and maybe that's why they're not wearing down? Got too much going on today. I'll break out the tools on Sunday.

Gerry, they're not glazed. They actually last that long. My truck has 140k miles on it, and the factory pads have TONS of material left.

Thanks WingNut. That's good to know. I'll just do a quick check of the rears tomorrow and be done with it.

It is hard to believe how long those pads last. I had a 96 Silverado that ate front pads every 20-30k. I was amazed at how long the GMT800s last.

My front pads on my 03 lasted 90k. I'm not hearing great things about the pad life of the GMT900s though.

Don't mess with them until they need it. I have seen. Pads last nearly 200k. Depends on driving habits how long they will last.

On the drums, there's probably a retainer clip on one of the studs. You'll have to cut it off the get the drum off. It doesn't have to be replaced, it's just to keep everything in place during assembly and shipping of the axles.

My 00 Z71 has 126K with original pads. There's still life, but I think my rotors are warped now. Longest lasting brakes on any vehicle I've ever owned, or even heard of.
